Mr. Nguyen Ha Nguyen, Deputy Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that students in Ho Chi Minh City can have 4 consecutive days off for the 2026 New Year, instead of just 1 day as prescribed. The number of days off will be decided by the school principals.
The above information was announced by a representative of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City at the first semester general education professional conference, held on December 9.

Schools can arrange for students to have a break from Thursday (January 1, 2026) to Sunday (January 4, 2026), or 4 days.
At the conference, in response to the question of whether schools can give students an extra day off on Friday (January 2) since New Year's Day (January 1, 2026) falls on Thursday, Mr. Nguyen said that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has given the schools the initiative. The principal will decide whether to give students a day off on January 2, 2026.
According to Mr. Nguyen, schools can arrange for students to have a break from Thursday (January 1, 2026) to Sunday (January 4, 2026), or 4 days. Make-up classes for Friday can be done online to ensure the program.
Regarding the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday schedule, Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that every year, the Tet holiday schedule for students will be decided by the City People's Committee. This year, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City will submit a proposal for the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday schedule to be a full week, meaning they will be off on the weekend and return to school at the beginning of the week.
Accordingly, the department is expected to propose to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to let students have a 2-week Lunar New Year holiday. Specifically, the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday schedule for students in Ho Chi Minh City is expected to be from February 9 to February 22, 2026 (ie from December 22 to the 6th day of the Lunar New Year).
