TPO - On the morning of August 27, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training informed that the Hanoi student delegation representing Vietnam at the 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics IOAA 2024, all contestants won medals.
This year's competition took place in Brazil from August 17 to 27 with the participation of nearly 300 candidates from 53 countries. The Vietnamese team sent 5 students from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted to compete.
As a result, all 5 members won medals, including 2 Silver medals and 3 Bronze medals.
The two students who won Silver Medals are Nguyen Ba Linh and Nguyen Xuan Hoang.
The three students who won Bronze Medals were Nguyen Thi Thu Minh, Luu Quang Minh, and Dam Ngoc Bao Lam.

This is the 8th time Vietnam has participated in this competition and also the first time 100% of the contestants have won medals.
At the competition, candidates had to go through a 5-hour theoretical exam; a 3-hour data processing exam and a day and night astronomy observation exam with a total time of 2 hours and 15 minutes.
In 2023, the Hanoi student delegation representing the Vietnamese team in this exam also won big with 2 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals.

The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) is one of the 12 most prestigious annual International Science Olympiads in the world, run by an International Committee whose members are leading scientists in Astronomy and Astrophysics in the world. The first IOAA was held in Thailand in 2007.
At the 10th IOAA Competition in 2016 in India, the first year of participation, the Hanoi team representing the Vietnam team achieved 1 Silver Medal and 4 Encouragement Prizes. With this achievement, the Ministry of Education and Training trusted and assigned the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to build a team representing the Vietnam Team to participate in the next IOAA Competitions.
At the 11th IOAA Competition in 2017 in Thailand, the 12th in 2018 in China, the 13th in 2019 in Hungary, the 14th in Colombia, the 15th in Georgia, the Vietnamese Team represented by Hanoi students all won excellently the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. In 2019, the Vietnamese team had a contestant win the Gold Medal with the highest score in the competition.
