Qualified to start construction in December
In the report of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee sent to the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the City People's Committee on the list of groundbreaking and inauguration ceremonies of large-scale projects and works to welcome the 14th National Congress of the Party, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assessed that the Ben Thanh - Can Gio metro project is qualified to hold a groundbreaking ceremony on December 19.

The project was proposed and invested by Vingroup (through Vinspeed), with a total length of about 54 km. The starting point, which is also the first station of the project, will be located in 23/9 Park, directly connected to metro line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien line), running along the park area parallel to Le Lai Street, then changing direction at Nguyen Thai Hoc Street to follow Ky Con axis and cross Ben Nghe canal.
After crossing the canal, the route goes northeast to Hoang Dieu street, then changes direction to the southeast axis at Nguyen Tat Thanh - Doan Nhu Hai area.
From here, the metro runs straight through Nha Rong port area to near Tan Thuan 2 bridge, then joins Nguyen Van Linh direction, crosses Nguyen Thi Thap intersection to enter Tan My ward, crosses Soai Rap river, runs along Rung Sac street to near Can Gio coastal tourist urban area.
The project passes through 8 communes and wards including: Ben Thanh, Xom Chieu, Tan Thuan, Tan My, Nha Be, Binh Khanh, An Thoi Dong and Can Gio (in districts 1, 4, 7, Nha Be district and old Can Gio district).

The line is built according to double track standards, 1,435 mm gauge, maximum design speed of 350 km/h. In phase 1, the project has two main stations: Ben Thanh and Can Gio. The investor expects that when demand increases, 4 stations Tan Thuan, Tan My, Nha Be and Binh Khanh will be added in phase 2. The depot and control center are located in Can Gio commune.
The total investment of the project is estimated to be more than 85,650 billion VND, equivalent to 3.3 billion USD. After completion, people from the central area of Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio by metro will only take about 12 minutes, about 7-8 times faster than the current travel time by ferry.
Unprecedented record of progress
Notably, Vinspeed expects the project to take only about 2 years to complete. If successful, this will be a new record in infrastructure construction progress in Vietnam, because Vinspeed proposes to build a metro train with a maximum speed of 350 km/h, more than 3 times faster than the routes currently being deployed in the country; the length is also more than 2 times longer than the Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1, but the time from the start of construction to the expected completion is 6 times faster than the routes already built.
Looking back from the ideation process to the investment proposal and approval, this is also the fastest urban railway line in history. At the conference announcing the planning of Ho Chi Minh City for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, held in early January, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh shared that he had just discussed with Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong - Chairman of Vingroup about building a subway system from the center of Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio.
In early March, the Ho Chi Minh City government had a direct meeting with investors on the planning of the urban railway system in Ho Chi Minh City and Vingroup reported to the leaders of the Department of Transport (now the Department of Construction) in detail the proposed content of the urban railway route connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio district.
Just 1 month later, Ho Chi Minh City submitted a report to the Prime Minister proposing to approve the Can Gio 4 metro line into the planning. Immediately after receiving the "nod" from the Government, the city's specialized departments continuously worked with businesses, giving suggestions to change the route to suit the city's planning as well as increase the project's operational capacity.
As a result, the investment policy of the Ben Thanh - Can Gio metro line was approved in November and was eligible to start construction on December 19.

Thus, it took less than 1 year for the urban railway line connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio to "take shape" from the time of proposal to the groundbreaking date. In comparison, Ho Chi Minh City metro line No. 1 was officially launched in 2006 but construction only began 6 years later; Ho Chi Minh City metro line No. 2 was approved in 2010 and is expected to officially start construction in January 2026; Hanoi's Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro was approved in 2008 and took 3 years to officially start construction...
Experts expect that the Ben Thanh - Can Gio metro line will be given all favorable conditions during construction to complete on schedule, creating the premise to open a new acceleration phase for the urban railway network of Ho Chi Minh City.
