In early December, the maple forest in the western mountainous region of Quang Tri , in Huong Phung commune, begins to change leaves to yellow, orange, and red. The treetops reflecting on the surface of the hydroelectric lake create a scene that many tourists compare to the changing leaves season in Europe. This is the right time for outdoor activities such as rowing, SUP, trekking and camping.

The scene of leaves changing color
Since late November, tourists have begun to flock to Huong Phung to wait for the moment when the leaves change color. According to Huy Vo (25 years old), a freelance photographer and member of the Vietnam - Khe Sanh Agricultural Tourism Cooperative, the maple forest is in its prime, with favorable weather for outdoor experiences. However, after the recent heavy rains, the water in the hydroelectric lake is still cloudy and not clear.

Experiences to try
On the lake, visitors can take a boat or paddle a SUP to see the whole maple forest reflected on the water surface. On the shore, the path through the grass and streams flowing into the lake is a relaxing walking path. When night falls, camping in the quiet space is an experience chosen by many groups of friends.

Lanh Lanh (from Quang Tri) has returned to Huong Phung 3 times but is still surprised by the peaceful beauty of the forest. The photo she took on November 30 received many interactions on social networks, suggesting trips to take a boat, paddle SUP on the lake or hike through the forest and camp overnight.

When is the best time to go?
The changing leaves only last from December to the end of January. During the day, the most beautiful moments are at dawn and dusk, when the soft light and reflective sky help the leaves stand out. According to Huy’s experience, Quang Tri often has rain and cold at the end of the year; so keep an eye on the forecast and choose a dry, sunny day to ensure safety.

Nature and typical plants
Scientifically , the maple tree is also called sau sau or bach giao huong. The trunk of sau sau is tall, large, and straight; the bark is opaque white with gray spots. In winter, the whole forest has a beauty reminiscent of birch forests in some Western countries.
Wild space, few services
The area of the maple forest is still wild, not much affected by tourism services, suitable for those who seek tranquility and want to be close to nature. Independent tourists should contact tour guides or local people for directions and appropriate service arrangements.

Combine schedule Huong Phung - Khe Sanh
Tourists can combine exploring Huong Phung and Khe Sanh, experiencing the Ho Chi Minh trail and enjoying the cuisine of the Van Kieu people. With a 2-day trip, the suggested schedule includes agricultural tourism in Khe Sanh, visiting the maple forest, camping and cloud hunting in the wind farm.
Tour cost according to source information: day tour from 650,000 VND; 2 days 1 night tour from 1,350,000 VND.
