Nowadays, proactive and comprehensive health care, especially after the pandemic, the need to use non-invasive, safe and home-use therapeutic devices is increasingly of interest to people. Grasping this requirement, the Institute of Materials Science has implemented the project "Research and manufacture of rehabilitation devices for the treatment of spinal calcification, pain relief and rapid wound recovery", chaired by Dr. Tong Quang Cong. The research results have brought practical products, contributing to improving the capacity for self-sufficiency in the production of medical equipment and serving community health care.

From scientific research to practical application

The highlight of the project is the harmonious combination of modern science and traditional knowledge, creating devices with deep therapeutic capabilities, safe and still close to the user. The research team has developed three main lines of devices: thermo-pharmaceutical therapy, thermo-cold therapy and multi-wavelength phototherapy.

Scientifically, the devices are researched on the basis of thermal, optical and thermodynamic principles, aiming to directly impact the damaged area, stimulate circulation, reduce inflammation and promote tissue regeneration. Along with that, the application of natural medicinal herbs such as mugwort, cinnamon, ginger helps increase the effectiveness of treatment, inheriting valuable experiences of traditional medicine.

In particular, phototherapy technology using the photobiological window (600–980 nm) clearly demonstrates its breakthrough. This is a technology that only appears in advanced medical systems, with the ability to penetrate deeply, stimulate cell proliferation and support rapid wound healing. Integrating this technology into compact, low-cost devices is an important step forward, contributing to expanding people's access.

The device is designed in the direction of “home medicine” - a health care trend that is being prioritized by the world . The elderly, people with degenerative spine disease, people with chronic muscle, bone, joint pain or post-surgery patients can easily use the device without the support of medical staff. Not only does it bring direct treatment benefits, this model also helps reduce costs for people and reduce the burden on medical facilities that are already under a lot of pressure.

Dr. Tong Quang Cong, project leader, shared: The thermal massage device is very compact and easy to operate. In particular, safety criteria are always put first. The structure of the device is simple, easy to mass produce, suitable for transfer to domestic enterprises. The use of indigenous medicinal materials also creates conditions for the formation of a closed value chain, linking the medical sector with agriculture and manufacturing industry, promoting local economic development.

Desire to spread to the community

Rehabilitation devices developed from the topic not only bring scientific value but also create positive impacts on society. In the context that many people, especially in rural areas or ordinary workers, lack access to specialized medical services, home treatment devices are a practical solution. Patients can proactively take care of their health, maintain continuous therapy, thereby improving the quality of life and reducing dependence on painkillers.

From an environmental perspective, the device operates on electricity, does not generate toxic medical waste and does not use chemicals in treatment. Increasing the use of natural medicinal herbs also helps promote sustainable herbal cultivation models, associated with the exploitation of indigenous knowledge, contributing to the development of a green economy.

In terms of expertise, the results of the project contribute to expanding new research directions in the field of rehabilitation in Vietnam. The combination of modern technology and traditional medicine not only brings higher treatment efficiency but also suits the natural conditions and usage habits of Vietnamese people. This is an important premise for developing “made in Vietnam” medical equipment products, capable of competing with imported products and meeting the growing domestic demand.

This topic therefore not only has academic value but also has profound practical significance, demonstrating the efforts of the Vietnamese scientific team in mastering technology, serving the community and aiming at the goal of developing a modern and sustainable medical equipment industry.
