The legend of a female teacher in the remote area has entered music

Few people know that the song “The Tay teacher holds the guitar and goes to the top of the mountain” by musician Van Ky originated from a real prototype: teacher To Thi Rinh - a pioneering teacher who lived in remote areas more than 60 years ago.

Interestingly , the origin of the song "The Tay teacher holds the guitar and goes to the top of the mountain" is Xuan Truong commune ( Cao Bang province) - the commune named after the first soldier of the Vietnam Propaganda Liberation Army who died.

The famous Me Pia Pass (Khau Coc Cha) was passed through to get to the place where teacher To Thi Rinh camped 60 years ago, and at that time there was no road like today.

The road to Xuan Truong commune must go through Khau Coc Cha pass with eighteen winding floors. Now, passing Khau Coc Cha is considered a "certificate" of courage for backpackers. Passing that pass, you will reach the locality named after the first martyr Xuan Truong, and will see the first image of the legend of the teacher who stayed in the village: teacher To Thi Rinh? And to create that legend, teacher To Thi Rinh crossed this pass more than 60 years ago, when there was no path to the top of the mountain and she opened the way with the soul and spirit of a twenty-year-old teacher!

Time has changed many things, but the story about teacher To Thi Rinh remains fresh. Her heart for the people of Xuan Truong is like a legend that will be told forever.

Co To Thi Rinh is a Tay ethnic person in Na Pu village, a village at the foot of the mountain of Tan Viet commune, Bao Lac district, old Cao Bang province. Going from one village to another sometimes takes a whole day, with many slopes and passes, dense vegetation, life is extremely difficult and deprived.

Ms. To Thi Rinh worked and helped families to gain sympathy from the people, and mobilized them to join her in building schools. She herself went into the forest to cut bamboo, reeds, and grass to build classrooms, roof them, and used chisels to make tables and chairs for the children. Once, after finishing building a classroom, a sudden heavy storm came and collapsed it. She mobilized the villagers to work day and night to make it possible for the children to have a classroom. At first, the class only had 4 to 5 students, sometimes there were only 1 or 2 students, but she still persevered, teaching and mobilizing.

To attract the children to come to class, she brought a guitar to play for them and taught them to sing. After each class, she also bathed and washed the children. Every night, by the late night lamp, she sat mending clothes for the children. The monthly rice standard was only 13 kg, but Ms. Rinh divided it into 4 portions for students who lived far away and had difficult circumstances and stayed at school with her. There were days when she only ate porridge, or vegetables and yams... to give her rice to the children. She said: "It's okay for me to be a little hungry, but if the students who stay with me are hungry, they might skip school and go home." Ms. Rinh also spent her small salary to buy paper, pens, ink, and books for the children. Understanding the psychology of mountain children, teacher Rinh always cares about and values the motto "Teaching letters, teaching people", applying the educational method "Learning while playing, playing while learning" so students can easily absorb... The details in the legend of the Tay teacher holding a guitar on the mountain top of that day, we still see in the image of teachers in remote areas of the 21st century.

And the story of the exemplary teacher To Thi Rinh from the misty mountain top in the remote village of Cao Bang was spread through the composition of musician Van Ky.

In 1967, the State organized the 4th National Congress of Heroes and Emulation Fighters when the resistance war against the US was entering a fierce phase. Before the congress, the Government invited artists and writers of many genres to introduce the heroes and emulation fighters who would be honored. That day, musician Van Ky paid special attention to an emulation fighter who made a special impression on him and moved him deeply. That was the young teacher To Thi Rinh who was stationed in the village to spread knowledge to children on remote mountain peaks. What teacher To Thi Rinh did for her beloved students left a shining example in the career of educating people, worthy of being reported as a typical example at the Emulation Congress of the whole North.

Dong Mu Fort relic in Xuan Truong commune, Cao Bang province.

In just one night, musician Van Ky finished writing the song “The Tay teacher holds the guitar and goes to the top of the mountain” in the melody of Tay folk songs. The next day, he asked the female group of the Central Song and Dance Troupe to practice and then included it in the performance program at the closing ceremony of the congress.

Touching lyrics such as: "Oh, the Tay teacher is so diligent, the Party sent her here to help the Meo people. She built the new school with her own hands, one hand making tables, one hand making chairs, one hand holding books, one hand holding a guitar. Listening to the teacher play, the children happily go to school. Now, after school by the clear stream in the afternoon sun, she bathes and washes the children" sows more love and hope for the examples of teachers who accept sacrifices to make the future of the children in the highlands brighter.

It has been more than 60 years since the teacher To Thi Rinh became a pioneer in the village. It has been almost 60 years since the song was born. Now, in any village along the border, we can meet thousands of teachers who carry the image and spirit of To Thi Rinh in the past.

Certainly, among the things that make teachers choose to sacrifice and bring the light of knowledge to the village, there are positive impacts from the story of teacher Rinh, and valuable spiritual encouragement from the song "Tay teacher holds the guitar to the top of the mountain" by musician Van Ky.
