There are projects that start from an idea, and there are projects that start from a moment. With Sunset Course, an 18-hole golf course located in the Tien Bay area - the world's top entertainment and resort paradise in the heart of Vinhomes Green Paradise - that moment is when the light, wind and terrain of Can Gio blend into a vivid cinematic scene. That enchanting moment makes it difficult for a great designer like Tiger Woods to "turn away".
Tiger Woods revealed that the Can Gio sunset with its orange, yellow and burgundy tones became a consistent source of inspiration, which he and the TGR Design team transformed into the terrain, flora, and the way the course receives sunlight and shade at different hours of the day.
But the connection between the game ’s greatest icon and this land runs deeper than that. He had always wanted to design a golf course on the continent where his mother grew up.
“ The opportunity to design the Sunset Course at Vinhomes Green Paradise was truly a perfect opportunity to make that wish come true ,” Tiger Woods shared about the decision to cooperate with Vingroup in Can Gio.
Since 2019, the "super tiger" and his team have gone through countless routing options (how to organize and arrange golf holes), freely creating and testing many ways to plan the ball path before finding the most optimal structure.
“We have been given full authority by Vingroup to create the best golf course possible at Vinhomes Green Paradise Can Gio. Vingroup has always shown a strong commitment to creating an excellent golf experience ,” he emphasized.
The spirit of the Sunset Course was shaped by Tiger Woods’ philosophy of respecting the natural landscape of the “jewel” Can Gio. As the sun sets, shadows from the slopes and native vegetation fall across the grass, making the entire Sunset Course look like a moving film.
The landscape design is organized into layers of vegetation typical of mangrove forests, distributed harmoniously and aesthetically, creating natural "breathing spaces", where each perspective changes according to the golfer's movements.
More than 2,500-3,000 large trees and about 20,000 shrubs are arranged reasonably, creating the feeling that the yard has "lived" for a long time and has the typical ecological depth of Can Gio.
Woods also added a unique local touch: a system of columns simulating mangrove roots at the driving range - a detail he said was both true to the Can Gio landscape and increased the course's recognition.
“ We have incorporated lush landscaping into the Sunset Course, with a palette of plants that reflect the native environment as well as the beautiful sunset views of Can Gio, ” said Tiger Woods.
Vietnam's new mark on the world luxury golf map
If the Can Gio sunset creates the emotional identity of the Sunset Course, then the terrain strategy is the factor that helps the golf course fully embody the “Tiger Woods Signature”.
TGR Design applies the philosophy of “sculpting” the terrain with natural curves, large and small slopes that constantly change, alternating high and low areas to bring different experiences to each golf hole. The holes are designed for golfers to hit the ball up, down, across and around the terrain, making the experience change with each shot.
Tiger Woods’ signature signature is the boldly shaped greens and bunkers, which create a strong visual impact and define strategy. The variety of green angles, sizes, and contours creates different challenges on each hole.
He condensed the spirit of Sunset Course into three words: Fun, Challenging and Memorable and emphasized: “ We worked very hard throughout the design process to create diversity in the structure of the holes at Sunset Course. This will provide an experience that is both strategic and visually pleasing, suitable for all levels of players.”
The presence of Sunset Course not only raises the living standards of ESG++ megacity residents when they have the privilege of experiencing an international standard golf course just a few steps away from home, but also helps Vietnam affirm its position on the global high-end golf map. For the first time in history, Asia has a golf course bearing the “Tiger Woods signature”, confidently standing next to world-famous courses, both in terms of landscape, strategy and emotion.
