With only about half a month left until the Mid-Autumn Festival, this is the time when mooncake stalls receive orders from acquaintances, companies, and businesses as gifts. However, despite being displayed quite early with diverse designs, many shops said that up to this point, the market is quite quiet.
On major streets of Phan Thiet City such as Tran Hung Dao, Nguyen Tat Thanh, Le Duan, Hung Vuong... many stalls selling moon cakes of big brands such as Kinh Do, Minh Dong Khanh, Kido... have been colorful for more than a week now. These stalls display a variety of different types of moon cakes from popular to high-end, meeting the needs of customers. According to a survey from the stalls, the prices of the cakes range from 55,000 - 300,000 VND/piece of many different brands.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hue - owner of Minh Dong Khanh mooncake stall at Tran Hung Dao roundabout said: “Most of the stalls opened for sale from the 20th of the 7th lunar month for display. Like every year, entering the 8th lunar month, the demand for mooncakes just started to bustle. This year's prices are also stable, only some types of individual cakes increased slightly due to increased input materials. Giving mooncake boxes to partners, customers, relatives or worshiping ancestors on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month has become a traditional habit of Vietnamese people during the Reunion Festival. Therefore, more or less, each family buys mooncakes on this occasion, depending on the needs of each family. Therefore, although the economy is difficult this year, the stalls still maintain a stable amount of imported cakes like last year. Hopefully, closer to the Mid-Autumn Festival, the number of customers coming to the stalls to buy cakes will be more crowded.”
Walking around Lotte Supermarket and Co.op Mart Phan Thiet, we can see that the Mid-Autumn Festival atmosphere is approaching, when the cake stalls are decorated quite eye-catchingly, attracting viewers. These supermarkets said that this year's market forecasts many people will tighten their spending, so the sales channel also considers when importing goods to sell. Before that, they contacted partners and large businesses that need to order cakes to balance and proactively import orders. In the past few days, customers mainly come to look, or just buy 1-2 cakes to try. Like every year, in the 8th lunar month, the moon cake stall area is busier. The owner of Kinh Do cake stall on Le Duan street shared: "Prices this year have only increased slightly by 2-5% for some types of cakes because the price of flour and sugar has increased. For more high-end cakes, prices remain the same to accompany consumers when the economy is still difficult."
According to moon cake manufacturing companies, this year, the designs and types of cakes are more diverse than every year. Kinh Do alone marks the 25-year development journey of the brand by launching many outstanding products such as: Premium Golden Moon, Premium Golden Moon, Traditional Autumn... with flavors of eight-treasure crab, scallops with XO sauce, hundred-flower shrimp, four-season roast chicken, premium green beans, almonds, bird's nest... priced at several million VND/box. Besides traditional and popular products, in the high-end moon cake segment, there is a richness and diversity in designs, not only do companies invest in high-end, diverse, luxurious packaging, but they also pay great attention to the cake filling, the cake skin is soft, less sweet and the filling is quite special.
In the context of economic difficulties, most stores offer discounts of 20-40% for orders of 50 cakes or more to increase purchasing power. In particular, this year, in addition to traditional sales channels, large companies have "covered" online sales channels such as e-commerce platforms, social networks, and express delivery to distribute products to consumers more quickly and conveniently.
Hopefully, as the moonlit days approach, the mooncake market will be more bustling, sending sweetness to loved ones despite the year's economic turmoil and worries.
