In 2020, South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group spent $1.1 billion to acquire Boston Dynamics (USA) - an engineering company specializing in the development and production of robots.
Boston Dynamics robots are used in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, maintenance, logistics, and military equipment. Hyundai is currently using Boston Dynamics robots at its newly opened car factory in Singapore.
The Hyundai Motor Group Singapore (HMGICS) plant officially opened on November 21, 2023. The plant has been in operation for some time, participating in the production of Hyundai IONIQ 5 models since the beginning of 2023, as well as IONIQ 5 autonomous taxis for the US market only.
The IONIQ 6 sedan is expected to be added to the plant's production lineup in 2024.
The Boston Dynamics robots are part of a workforce of 200 robots at the plant, which has the capacity to produce up to 30,000 electric vehicles per year, according to a statement from Hyundai.
According to statistics, about 50% of manufacturing tasks are being performed by robots. Robots can simulate tasks in digital virtual space or metadata, thereby being able to move and assemble parts on the production line, bypassing the traditional conveyor belt assembly model.
In addition to taking on assembly, inspection and production organization tasks, robots are also involved in more than 60% of the parts, order and shipping management processes.
This frees people from repetitive and time-consuming tasks, allowing them to focus on more productive creative work.
Thanks to its advanced manufacturing capabilities, HMGICS will serve as the first testbed for developing future mobility solutions, including purpose-built vehicles (Purpose Built Vehicles) said Hyundai.
The construction cost of this factory is estimated at about 300 million USD.
