Judge Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza said the measures proposed by the lawyers were not enough to mitigate the potential risks of allowing Mr. Duterte to be released on bail. In addition, the court also rejected the humanitarian argument of the defense.
The 80-year-old's lawyers had earlier petitioned for his release, citing his deteriorating health. They said Mr Duterte was "weak and frail" and stressed that his detention during the trial was "cruel".

According to defense documents, the former Philippine president's cognitive abilities have deteriorated to the point where he is unable to cooperate effectively with his lawyers. Mr. Duterte was not present at today's hearing.
Mr Duterte, who led the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, was arrested in early March and is currently being held at the ICC prison in Scheveningen, near The Hague, where the court is based.
The former Philippine president now faces three charges of “crimes against humanity”. During his tenure, Mr. Duterte launched a full-scale war on drugs, giving police the power to kill suspects without mercy. According to police figures, the campaign has left 6,000 people dead.
A spokesman for Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos said the Philippine government "respects" the ICC ruling.
