This trend comes as the global population continues to grow and demand for high-level skills expands, particularly in the two “giants” of India and China.
Between 2023 and 2035, South Asia is forecast to see a 32% increase in tertiary education students, to 66 million, while East Asia will see a 36% increase, to 53 million. Southeast Asia and West Asia will see significant expansion. In contrast, North America will see only a modest increase from 12.7 to 12.8 million students, while the US is even forecast to see a 1% decline in its total number of domestic and international students.
The slowdown in the United States and many other developed countries is largely due to demographic changes and declining enrollment among both young and older students. In contrast, Indonesia has seen strong growth in both undergraduate and graduate education, combined with population growth to produce a remarkable increase in total enrollment. The country is expected to add 4.3 million students, reaching more than 13 million by 2035.
Although still far behind the two leading countries, China with 47 million students and India with 53 million, Indonesia will become a new highlight on the global education map. The report also shows that the UK and Germany are the two rare European countries that maintain growth, while Eastern Europe is forecast to decline sharply.
