On Friday (December 5) at the State Palace, Central Jakarta (Indonesia), Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received the Indonesian sports delegation attending the 33rd SEA Games. There, he turned to ask Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir how much the prize money for athletes who won medals at the games was.
"500 million rupiah, sir," Mr. Thohir replied. Immediately, President Subianto requested to double the prize money, from 500 million to 1 billion rupiah (about 1.6 billion VND). "I believe that athletes do not compete for money, and effort and dedication cannot be exchanged for material things," he said, "But the country understands and respects the heroes' achievements. The prize money is a sign of respect for them. Sports is a symbol, also a metaphor for life."
The Indonesian sports delegation attending the 33rd SEA Games, consisting of 1,021 athletes, will compete in 49 sports and three demonstration sports with the goal of winning 80 gold medals, ranking third overall.
According to Minister of Youth and Sports Thohi, Indonesia has lost 41 gold medals before the 33rd SEA Games started, because many sports were removed from the list. However, he emphasized his determination to achieve the target of 80 gold medals, and hoped that the athletes would do better to exceed the set target.
"80 gold medals is the target, but are we satisfied with this number? Definitely not. We want to see the best results. The Ministry of Youth and Sports is maximizing the budget to support athletes, so that they can win as many medals as possible," he declared.
