Apple has officially released iOS 26.5 for iPhones and iPadOS 26.5 for iPads, bringing a host of new changes related to security, the ecosystem of services, and personalized experiences before the company moves on to iOS 27, expected to appear at the WWDC 2026 event next month. The most notable upgrade in iOS 26.5 is Apple's addition of end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, allowing iPhone and Android users to text more securely with a protection mechanism similar to iMessage when supported by their carrier, and a lock icon to confirm that the content is fully encrypted.
This move is seen as a major step forward for Apple in the cross-platform messaging experience competition, especially as users are increasingly concerned about privacy and the security of their personal data in the context of technology platforms continuously expanding connectivity between different operating systems.
Beyond focusing on security, Apple is also accelerating its monetization strategy by integrating Suggested Places into Apple Maps to suggest locations based on user search history and location, and preparing to introduce ads directly within the Maps app starting this summer.
Apple Maps' introduction of ads quickly sparked controversy among iPhone users, with many arguing that the iOS experience was becoming "more like Android," while others believed it was an inevitable step as Apple sought to expand its service revenue amid slowing global smartphone market growth. In addition to the two major changes mentioned above, iOS 26.5 also adds a new set of Pride Luminance wallpapers that sync with Apple Watch bands and watch faces, continuing Apple's annual Pride campaign to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community globally through more personalized technology products. While not a "revolutionary" update, iOS 26.5 still shows that Apple is gradually perfecting its ecosystem around AI recommendations, data security, and online services before entering a new competitive phase in the smartphone AI market in 2026.
iPhone users can now download iOS 26.5 by going to Settings > General > Software Update, while Apple has also simultaneously released patches for many older devices such as iOS 15.8.8, iOS 16.7.16, and iPadOS 17.7.11 to continue maintaining security support for its device ecosystem.
