The Chinese smartphone market has just ended the 11/11 Singles' Day shopping season - considered the biggest event of the year on e-commerce channels - with overall results that were not very positive.
According to the latest report released by market research organization CounterPoint Research on November 27, total smartphone sales in the country of one billion people during this year's holiday season only grew 3% compared to the same period last year.
Notably, this meager growth was largely thanks to Apple's contribution, as the US tech giant achieved a growth rate of 37%.
Counterpoint pointed out that if Apple sales were excluded, the Chinese smartphone market on November 11 would have declined by 5% compared to the same period last year. This shows that the general consumer sentiment is still very cautious under macroeconomic pressure.
According to Counterpoint senior analyst Ivan Lam, the outstanding performance of the iPhone 17 series lies in the correct product strategy and pricing.
With the regular iPhone 17, Apple kept the same price as the previous generation, but significantly upgraded the memory, expanded the optical module and equipped it with more advanced sensors. This strategy caused iPhone 17 sales to double compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, for the two high-end versions of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, Apple still applied a discount of 300 yuan (about 42 USD ) during the promotion period. This move helped the Pro models achieve sales growth of more than 10%, at the medium to high level.
In contrast to Apple's dominance, China's top domestic brands face downward pressure on sales due to adjustments in the timing of new product launches.
Among the major brands, Huawei recorded the biggest decline. The core reason was the delay in launching the Mate 80 Series flagship, causing the company to miss two important weeks during the important promotional period of the 11/11 Singles' Day shopping season.
