Apple is reportedly preparing a major overhaul of its AI ecosystem across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. According to recent leaks, iOS 27 will allow users to choose between various artificial intelligence models such as Gemini, Claude, or ChatGPT for use in AI features on their devices.

If this information turns out to be true, it would be Apple's most significant shift in the AI race since the introduction of Apple Intelligence. Instead of relying on a single partner as it does now, Apple seems to want to transform the iPhone into a more open platform where users can customize AI to suit their individual needs.
According to reports, the new internal feature is called "Extensions" by Apple. Users can install compatible AI apps from the App Store and then select them as the default model for Apple Intelligence through the system settings. This means Siri, Writing Tools, or image creation tools can work on multiple different AI platforms.
Currently, Apple is reportedly testing integrations with Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude. ChatGPT will likely continue to be present in the Apple ecosystem, but will no longer be the only third-party AI option as it once was.
This move suggests Apple is shifting its strategy amid concerns about lagging behind competitors in AI. While Google, Microsoft, and Samsung are continuously pushing AI generative features on their devices, Apple is still considered quite cautious. Opening up to multiple AI models working together could help the company quickly catch up in the race without having to develop all the technology from scratch.
One notable feature is that Apple may allow users to assign different Siri voices depending on the AI being used. This means the virtual assistant experience on the iPhone will become significantly more flexible instead of being limited to a fixed style as it is currently.
Sources also indicate that Apple is aiming for deeper AI integration across its entire operating system. Beyond Siri, tools such as text editing, image creation, content processing, and daily task support could all leverage external AI models. This could transform the iPhone into a truly "cross-platform" AI device.
Notably, Google recently confirmed it is collaborating with Apple to develop a new generation of Apple Intelligence based on Gemini technology. This further increases the likelihood that Gemini will play a significant role in iOS 27 and the next generation of Siri.
Apple is expected to announce more details about its new AI strategy at the WWDC 2026 conference in June. iOS 27 will most likely be officially released this fall alongside the iPhone 18 series.
If these changes become a reality, the iPhone could enter a whole new phase – where users are no longer limited to a single AI system, but can choose the smartest tool that best suits them.
