According to AFP news agency, the ministry's announcement said: "After a meeting between senior officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Gambia... both sides decided to announce the decision to resume diplomatic relations on July 29, 2024 to ensure the interests of both countries."
The statement said Tehran and Banjul agreed to develop friendly relations based on the principles of mutual respect and equality as well as common interests.
The two countries will also expand cooperation in all fields of politics , economics, investment, trade and culture towards ensuring common interests.
The move came as Iran's acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri met his Gambian counterpart Mamadou Tangara.
Gambia's top diplomat is in Tehran to attend the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian, scheduled for July 30.
According to Press TV , on November 23, 2010, Gambia severed diplomatic and economic relations with Iran, and ordered the expulsion of all Iranian government representatives in the West African country within 48 hours.
Gambia did not give any reason for the move to cut ties, but Iran said it was due to pressure from the US.
One event that preceded the move to cut ties was the Nigerian government’s announcement that it had seized an illegal shipment of weapons from Iran to Gambia. At the time, Tehran insisted that the shipment, sent by a private company, was in compliance with international law. However, Gambia denied that Banjul was the recipient of the weapons.
