In a technological and medical breakthrough, Israeli doctors at Rabin Medical Center have successfully performed genetically modified cell therapy to treat three patients with multiple myeloma - a form of blood cancer.

According to a VNA correspondent in Israel, scientists at the Samueli Pioneer Institute for Integrative Oncology at Rabin Medical Center have researched gene-modified cell therapies based on CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) technology, aiming to treat patients with resistant multiple myeloma.

CAR-T technology is one of the most advanced innovations in modern cancer treatment, using the patient's own immune cells (T cells) to destroy cancer cells.

T cells are genetically modified in the laboratory to attach CAR receptors, helping them recognize and destroy malignant cells, before being infused back into the patient's body to attack the cancer.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow, with approximately 550 new cases diagnosed each year in Israel. Despite the increasing variety of treatment options and significant improvements in patient life expectancy, some patients do not respond to existing therapies, creating an urgent need for more advanced methods.

The first three patients admitted for treatment did not experience any complications and were discharged as scheduled.

“This is very important news for patients,” said Dr. Iuliana Vaxman, Head of the Multiple Myeloma and Rare Plasma Cell Disorders Center at the Davidoff Cancer Center at Rabin Medical Center. “Our goal is to provide comprehensive treatment at the new center, and having this advanced, locally produced technology available at RMC helps us achieve that goal.”

Professor Gal Markel, Director of the Davidoff Cancer Center, said this therapy is not just for patients with multiple myeloma.

He affirmed that he will soon expand CAR-T research and treatment to solid tumors such as liver cancer, lung cancer, and then autoimmune diseases./.
