This was a predictable result when karate announced its competition schedule at the 19th Asian Games. Japan - the birthplace of karate - surprisingly did not compete in this event. There were even only 4 countries participating in women's team kata: Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia and Brunei.

With only 4 Southeast Asian countries participating, the Vietnamese women's kata team is considered the strongest. Because at the 32nd SEA Games , which took place just 5 months ago, this event brought Vietnam a gold medal.

At that time, the three girls Nguyen Thi Phuong, Ngoc Tram and Thu Uyen also competed excellently at the SEA Games. These three girls in their early twenties defeated the Indonesian team in the final. Meanwhile, Malaysia stopped in the semi-finals.

At the 19th Asian Games, Indonesia also did not participate in this event. Therefore, Malaysia became Vietnam's number one opponent. In the semi-finals, Malaysia scored 38.8 points, surpassing Brunei (38.2). Meanwhile, Vietnam (40.8) easily defeated Cambodia (38.9).

The achievements of Nguyen Thi Phuong, Ngoc Tram and Thu Uyen also bear the mark of a famous name in the Vietnamese karate world. That is "kata queen Nguyen Hoang Ngan".

While still competing, Hoang Ngan won 7 SEA Games gold medals, 2 Asiad silver medals and the 2008 world gold medal in the individual category. She went to Japan to study and took over the role of coach of the Vietnamese women's kata team after returning home.
