Integrating historical and cultural values into tourism.

An Giang is a land rich in historical and cultural traditions, a place where many unique values of the Kinh, Khmer, Cham, and Hoa ethnic communities converge. Researching, preserving, and effectively promoting the value of historical and cultural relics is an urgent requirement to further boost the tourism industry in the future.

The province currently has 152 historical sites, including 3 special national sites, 50 national sites, and 99 provincial sites; 12 provincial-level festivals, 143 commune-level festivals, and 3 traditional craft villages listed in the national catalog of intangible cultural heritage. Each tangible and intangible heritage needs to be identified, protected, and sustainably exploited, linked to cultural, ecological, and spiritual tourism . Typical cultural festivals such as the Via Ba Chua Xu festival at Sam Mountain, the Nguyen Trung Truc festival, the Bay Nui bull racing festival, the Ngo boat racing festival, along with traditional crafts such as Cham brocade weaving, Khmer brocade weaving, and Southern Vietnamese folk music... are regularly maintained and organized in an increasingly systematic manner, contributing to affirming An Giang's position on the national cultural map.

The role of historical and cultural values in tourism development is the core foundation that creates the unique identity of each locality. In the context of increasingly fierce tourism competition, unique and "unreplicable" elements are a great advantage. For An Giang, these values are not only resources but also the "soul" of tourism products. Historical and religious relics reflect the depth of the region's culture; traditional festivals showcase the rich spiritual life and culture of ethnic communities, creating diversity and attractiveness. Effective exploitation contributes to enhancing the visitor experience, extending their stay, promoting local economic development, and preserving and spreading traditional cultural values.

According to Tu Bao Anh, Director of Amazing Tour Trading and Tourism Joint Stock Company, developing tourism through festivals is not only an opportunity to preserve and promote traditional cultural values but also a sustainable path to economic development, community cohesion, and improving people's lives. Therefore, with reasonable investment and effective communication and promotion strategies, An Giang can become an attractive destination for spiritual and festival tourism, attracting a large number of domestic and international tourists.

The province continues to prioritize cultural heritage preservation, festival management and organization, heritage protection, and the restoration and renovation of historical sites. The province has issued numerous regulations on heritage management, focusing on the protection and utilization of historical sites. Furthermore, technology is being applied through the mapping of protected areas around historical sites, enhancing management and dissemination, contributing to traditional education, tourism development, and the promotion of the unique cultural values of the Southern region.

According to Truong Hoa Lam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh An Commune, in recent times, the management, preservation, and promotion of the historical and cultural value of Son Trung Palace have received attention from the provincial cultural sector and local authorities. The Son Trung Palace Management Board has mobilized social resources and promoted the role of the community in the restoration, preservation, protection, and safeguarding of the monument, contributing to meeting the cultural, religious, and sightseeing needs of people both within and outside the locality.

Mr. Pham Van Tung, Deputy Head of the Professional and Museum Department of the Oc Eo Cultural Relics Management Board, said: “Most of the artifacts in the exhibition hall are digitized using QR codes with automatic explanations. In addition to documents and artifacts explained in Vietnamese, we have also developed content in English, Japanese, Korean, etc., to serve domestic and international tourists who come to visit and learn about the Oc Eo culture.”

In the coming period, the Department of Culture and Sports will continue to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of state management in the field of cultural heritage, preserving and promoting the value of historical sites, in conjunction with the sustainable development of cultural heritage tourism. At the same time, it will accelerate the digitalization of festival organization processes, combining artistic performances and experiential activities for tourists; and build brands for typical festivals.
