The possibility of Anh Vien's younger brother winning the first gold medal for Vietnam at SEA Games 33

On the morning of December 10, Vietnamese swimming will compete at the 33rd SEA Games, with the focus on Nguyen Quang Thuan, younger brother of famous former swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien.

Specifically, this 19-year-old swimmer will compete in the men's 200m individual medley on December 10, with the qualifying round starting at 9:00 a.m., and the final taking place at 6:00 p.m.

This year, 19 years old, Quang Thuan participates in the 3rd SEA Games of his career. In the two previous SEA Games, his younger brother Anh Vien won silver medal in the 400m individual medley.

Those who follow Anh Vien's career will feel a familiar presence in Quang Thuan. Like his sister, he focuses on the mixed event group, with medium distances ranging from 200m to 400m.

It was a challenge, but also a blessing for Quang Thuan to enter this category, which was another "shadow" as big as his sister Nguyen Thi Anh Vien - swimmer Tran Hung Nguyen.

Rising to prominence at the 2019 SEA Games, Hung Nguyen has won a series of gold medals in the individual medley category. Over the past 6 years, this Quang Binh native and Nguyen Huy Hoang have been the two leading stars of Vietnamese swimming.

For this reason, Vietnamese fans are not too regretful when Quang Thuan won silver medals in the 400m individual medley in two consecutive SEA Games. Because there is still a Hung Nguyen at his peak to win gold for the Vietnamese swimming team.

But from this SEA Games, Quang Thuan can completely compete fairly with Hung Nguyen.

Not long after the 2023 SEA Games, Quang Thuan showed a strong breakthrough at the Hangzhou Asiad.

In China, Quang Thuan finished 7th in the final of the 400m individual medley, ahead of Hung Nguyen (8th).

In the 200m individual medley, Quang Thuan continued to compete fiercely with his senior. If Hung Nguyen finished 9th with a time of 2 minutes 3.53 seconds, Quang Thuan also followed closely with a time of 2 minutes 4.45 seconds.

It is not yet possible to confirm that the younger brother Anh Vien is on par with his senior. But at the present time, Quang Thuan is completely capable of competing equally with Hung Nguyen.

And in the 200m individual medley event taking place on the first official competition day of the SEA Games, Nguyen Quang Thuan was one of the leading candidates to win the gold medal.

It could even be the first gold medal for Vietnamese sports at the SEA Games, if taekwondo and canoeing (taking place from 2 p.m.) do not achieve their goals, or are delayed.

A special milestone awaits the younger brother of the legendary Anh Vien.
