An Indian has caused a stir online after sharing how he bought a new MacBook for a significantly cheaper price. The man posted on Reddit that in addition to enjoying an 11-day beach vacation in Vietnam, he also bought a new computer for a cheaper price in India.

“If you are planning to buy a MacBook or iPhone worth more than 2 lakh rupees in India (nearly 60 million VND), trust me, it is worth taking a short trip to Vietnam. You will get the device cheaper and also get a short vacation,” he wrote on Reddit.

The man shared a cost breakdown. He said that MacBook prices in India are very high due to import duties and Apple’s premium pricing model in the country. A 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 purchased on Amazon India costs nearly 190,000 rupees (nearly 57 million VND), with the card discount, it is 185,000 rupees.

Meanwhile, the MacBook purchased in Vietnam cost just over 47 million VND, and was also refunded 8.5% VAT, or about more than 3 million VND at Noi Bai airport. The man said that the staff at the store even allowed him to open the MacBook box to check, then re-seal it to ensure eligibility for VAT refund at the airport.

According to the post, he booked the cheapest round-trip flight to Hanoi, worked remotely during his stay, and spent his free time exploring the city. During his trip, he visited more than 15 stores to find the best prices.

If you deduct the cost of buying a MacBook, his 11-day trip to Vietnam only cost 48,000 rupees (more than 14 million VND), including airfare, online visa fees, and visits to Ha Long and Ninh Binh. His post also shares travel experiences for vegetarians, using public transport, and what types of money to prepare.

At the end of the article, this person also introduced his “buying on behalf” service. “Just sponsor my trip from 15,000-20,000 rupees, you will still save 15,000-20,000 rupees per device and receive the device in 1 day,” he wrote.

In the comments section below, many people praised the idea and said they would visit Vietnam once, maybe just for tourism. One account agreed, commenting that the prices of Apple products in India are high.

MacBooks in this country are heavily overpriced due to import duties of up to 20% and goods and services tax (GST) of 18%, along with distribution costs, dealer margins, logistics, and lack of competition. According to conversion data from July by Face of IT, the price of this device in India is higher than Australia, UAE, Hong Kong due to different tax policies.
