According to data released by the General Statistics Office this morning, in March, Vietnam welcomed nearly 1.6 million international visitors, up 4.4% over the previous month and up 78.6% over the same period last year. In the first quarter, the number of visitors reached more than 4.6 million, up 72% over the same period in 2023 and up 3.2% over the same period in 2019 - the year considered the "golden year of Vietnam's tourism industry".
South Korea remained the largest market sending visitors to Vietnam in the first 3 months with more than 1.2 million arrivals, equal to 150% compared to the same period last year and up 10% compared to the same period in 2019. Second place was mainland China with nearly 890,000 arrivals, 6.4 times higher than the same period in 2023 but has not yet recovered to the level of nearly 1.3 million arrivals in 2019. The remaining top 10 markets sending visitors to Vietnam in the first 3 months of the year include Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, India, the US and Australia.
Most visitors to Vietnam came by air, with more than 3.9 million arrivals in the first quarter. Visitors arriving by sea reached more than 136,000 and by road nearly 630,000, both up 1.6 to 4 times compared to the same period last year.
The number of Vietnamese people leaving the country in March reached nearly 548,000, an increase of nearly 43% over the same period last year. In the first quarter, the number of Vietnamese tourists going abroad reached 1.2 million, an increase of 11.5% over the same period in 2023.
According to the General Statistics Office, tourism has recovered strongly thanks to the effectiveness of favorable visa policies and tourism promotion programs. However, if the tourism industry wants to continue to attract a large number of international visitors, it needs to create many unique tourism products to serve and retain visitors to stay longer and spend more.
According to the General Statistics Office, tourism and trade promotion activities helped the service sector increase by 6.12% in the first quarter of the year and contribute more than 52.2% to GDP.
