Housekeeping staff at hotels around the world are accustomed to guests leaving items behind after check-out. According to Hotels.com's annual survey, the most common forgotten items are clothing, phone chargers, cosmetics, electric toothbrushes, and wireless headphones. However, beyond these familiar items, the list of lost and found items at hotels is becoming increasingly bizarre and expensive.
According to The Independent , many hotels have discovered Rolex watches, Hermès Birkin bags, engagement rings, supercar keys, and large amounts of cash left behind in rooms. There have even been cases where guests forgot a watch valued at approximately $6 million after checking out.
Some hotels reported that staff had to immediately contact internal security or lock down the storage area because the item was of such high value.
Beyond luxury items, hotels frequently encounter bizarre possessions that even staff are baffled by inexplicable occurrences in guest rooms. According to a survey cited by the Indian Express , this list includes rice cookers, car tires, blenders, construction pipes, dentures, full leg casts, and even entire teeth.

To minimize the risk of loss, many accommodation experts advise travelers to check their rooms in a fixed order before checking out: electrical outlets, drawers, safes, bathrooms, under the bed, and behind the curtains. Photo: Kateryna/Pexels. |
One of the most troublesome categories of lost and found items for hotel staff is pets. Hotels.com reports that guests have left behind pet lizards, chicks, and other small animals in their rooms. Earlier this year, US media reported that a hotel in Michigan discovered a nearly one-meter-long alligator under a bed after a guest checked out. The owner later said he thought it had "escaped."
Besides the bizarre items, many hotel staff say that the most common things they encounter are everyday belongings. Real Simple quotes accommodation experts as saying that guests often forget eyeglasses, prescription medication, bank cards, personal pillows, or shoes due to the hurried pace of travel . Many items get stuck under the bed, mixed in with bedding, or hidden behind curtains, so owners only discover them after they've left the city.
According to travel experts, leaving familiar surroundings makes people more easily distracted than usual. Professor Charan Ranganath of the University of California Davis noted on Hotels.com that while vacations help people relax, they also disrupt daily memory habits. This is why many people forget things, even if they are valuable or closely related to their personal lives.
