Room occupancy at domestic destinations that depend on airfares is not high because before the decision to take a 5-day break on April 30, guests tended to travel nearby.
According to many travel agencies, this year’s April 30 holiday is affected by airfare and the original two-day holiday schedule, which was later changed to five days. This has led domestic tourists to choose nearby travel, avoiding destinations that require air travel.
Data from Mustgo - a booking platform with more than 2,000 hotel partners nationwide - shows that Phu Quoc's room occupancy rate is low. 5-star hotels and villas in the north and south of the island recorded an occupancy rate of 25%, some hotels with large room numbers reached 15%, and the 4-star segment in the center reached 45%.
Some villas and resorts in the south of the island have maintained 60% occupancy because April is still the international tourist season. Currently, Phu Quoc is attracting few domestic tourists, mainly international tourists from Taiwan, China, South Korea and India. Most accommodation establishments on the island have removed holiday surcharges.
4-5 star hotels in Quy Nhon are currently at 20% occupancy, a Mustgo representative commented, mainly due to high airfares - ranging from 3.3-3.7 million VND round trip from Hanoi . Meanwhile, the 3-star segment is at 40-50% occupancy but the number of rooms is not much.
The occupancy rate of 5-star hotels in Da Lat is about 40-50%, the 3-4 star segment is equivalent to Quy Nhon, about 50%, guests are mainly from the south, traveling by car. Mr. Nguyen Nhat Vu, Permanent Vice President of Lam Dong Province Tourism Association, does not think Da Lat can be "full of rooms" this time. He said the city will lose a large number of guests from the north because of high airfares. Every year, many accommodation establishments start to "full of rooms" on April 30 two weeks in advance. This year, the number of advance bookings of a large tourism agency in Da Lat is still limited.
Mustgo's survey shows that domestic 5-star hotels in Nha Trang are reaching 80-90% occupancy, international 5-star hotels are reaching 50-60% during the period of April 26-28; the period of April 30-May 1 is 15% lower, the 3-star segment is still poor. Mr. Tran Quoc Hung, Head of Mustgo's Product Development Department, explained that Nha Trang receives a significant number of visitors by road from Ho Chi Minh City and the Central Highlands.
Some other hot spots of southern tourism such as Vung Tau and Phan Thiet have average capacity of 30% to 50%, most still charge extra, some establishments require mandatory meals.
In the Central region, Da Nang is the top destination as beachfront hotels have reached over 80% occupancy for the weekend of April 26-28, with many places reporting full rooms for some nights. Hotels in the city have an occupancy rate of around 60%, expected to increase further in the next two weeks.
During the period of April 30-May 1, the average room occupancy rate decreased by 20-30% compared to the period of April 26-28. However, with the proposal of a 5-day break just approved, hotels have started to receive more booking requests. On the other hand, the "full room" weekend period has also caused many guests to postpone their departure date to April 30-May 1. For Hoi An, the average occupancy rate is 50-60% for the period of April 26-28, and the following days will decrease by about 5%.
In the North, Sa Pa recorded visitors mainly traveling between April 27-29, with room occupancy rates above 70%, the best-selling 3-star segment (60-70%), 4-5 stars around 50-60%. Many hotels have removed surcharges and mandatory meals for May 1 due to the closeness to the return to work schedule.
Ha Long will have the Ha Long Carnival on April 28, so most tourists will travel from April 27 to April 29, with few on the remaining two days. The 5-star segment has an occupancy rate of 60-70%, while 3-4 stars are around 70%.
The impact of airfares has led people to choose to travel around big cities by private vehicles. Ms. Le Thi Thu Thuy, manager of the Anbooking system, which manages more than 70 villas around Hanoi, said that 70% of accommodation facilities were fully booked on April 30 and May 1, and the number of guests is gradually increasing on April 27-28. The prices offered by villas during the holiday are the same as those on regular Saturdays.
Anbooking representative added that the initial two-day holiday schedule made many customers choose to travel nearby, after the five-day holiday schedule was finalized, the number of customers booking rooms in Quang Binh tended to increase. This unit is also promoting train and hotel combos for customers from Hanoi to Quang Binh to minimize the impact of high airfares.
Mr. Pham Anh Vu - Director of Vietnam Tourism Communications - shared that foreign tours accounted for 60% of total products sold during the April 30 holiday, reaching the target of 80%. Domestic products that sold well were road routes to Da Lat, Nha Trang, Ninh Thuan, Phan Thiet. However, Phu Quoc and Quy Nhon sold poorly due to the impact of transportation service prices.
"Information about the extended holiday stimulates customer demand, but the announcement also limits the number of customers," said Mr. Vu. The representative of the unit said that the decision to extend the April 30 holiday will affect families and travel companies near the city, which could help increase the number of customers by about 30%. Currently, the business and operations departments of the enterprise are making efforts to provide additional services to serve the increased number of customers.
