Queen Mother Y Lan's real name was Le Thi Yen (1044-1117), from Tho Loi village, Thuan Thanh district, Bac Ninh province, now Duong Xa commune, Gia Lam district, Hanoi . She was a concubine of King Ly Thanh Tong (appointed as Nguyen Phi) and the mother of King Ly Nhan Tong. With her perseverance in learning, Nguyen Phi Y Lan helped the king do well in the court's work, twice taking over the king's regency, helping the country to be peaceful and prosperous.
To commemorate her merits, the people honored her as “Quan Am Nu” and built a temple in her hometown called Nguyen Phi Y Lan Temple (also known as Ba Tam Temple). In 1996, Nguyen Phi Y Lan Temple and Linh Nhan Tu Phuc Pagoda (built by her in 1115) were ranked.
On the occasion of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, Gia Lam district and the people of Duong Xa commune built a statue of Queen Mother Y Lan, standing 9.1m high and weighing 30 tons. The statue is confirmed to be the largest pure bronze statue in Vietnam.
