On the evening of May 15th, at Ninh Kieu Wharf Park in Can Tho City, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City organized the opening ceremony of the "Southern Folk Music and Singing Festival" of the city in 2026. This activity is part of a series of events commemorating the 136th anniversary of the birth of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 – May 19, 2026).
The "Southern Folk Music and Singing Festival of Can Tho City 2026" will take place from May 15th to May 19th, 2026, with the participation of 11 communes/wards and over 300 musicians and performers.
The participating units performed 64 acts (including 20 acts by independent contestants), encompassing the following genres: solo singing, duet singing, trio singing, group singing, skits, orchestral performances, and solo performances of traditional musical instruments.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, stated that Southern Vietnamese folk songs have become one of the unique forms of folk performance, closely associated with the working life and spiritual life of the people of the South, contributing to nurturing their souls.

This year's festival not only continues to introduce and promote the quintessential values of folk songs and traditional musical instruments of Southern Vietnam, but also serves as a practical activity contributing to the preservation and promotion of the cultural values of ethnic minorities, folk art, and traditional art, in accordance with Resolution No. 80 dated January 7, 2026, of the Politburo on the development of Vietnamese culture.

Besides playing musical instruments and singing folk songs, the Organizing Committee has also expanded to include other forms such as reciting poetry, excerpts from traditional opera, etc., with themes praising the Party and beloved Uncle Ho; praising love for the homeland and country; love between couples; achievements in building the homeland and country in general and Can Tho city in particular during the đổi mới (renovation) period; highlighting good people and good deeds; building a cultured and civilized urban lifestyle;... promising to bring local people and tourists truly attractive programs and performances rich in cultural identity.
