Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tu - Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts - commented that the 100th anniversary of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, formerly the Indochina School of Fine Arts (École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine) founded by painter Victor Tardieu in 1925, is an important historical milestone, marking a journey of fine arts training, a century of contributions to the fine arts, culture and art education in Vietnam, which is advanced and imbued with identity.
“We always strive to make the school truly a training facility for high-quality fine arts human resources for the country; a leading center for research, creation and criticism of fine arts; and a cultural and artistic bridge between Vietnam and international friends,” said Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tu.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Nghia Phuong - Vice Principal of Vietnam University of Fine Arts - acknowledged that the school has overcome difficulties and challenges to maintain its operations as well as pursue its philosophy and training goals. Generations of lecturers and students have overcome many hardships to survive from the Indochina Fine Arts period to the restoration of peace , so that in 1955 the school could operate stably at its current address, 42 Yet Kieu, Cua Nam, Hanoi.
“In the following stages, with the attention of the Party and the State, the school expanded its training scale but always faced challenges. In the changes of the world art flow, how can the school maintain its training perspective, integrate without losing its identity, develop new languages and art forms without fading the academic training method; create new art but not forget the task of serving the Fatherland and the Vietnamese people for the common development of the nation”, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Nghia Phuong said.

Dr. Ho Trong Minh - Deputy Dean in charge of the Faculty of Graphics, Vietnam University of Fine Arts - said that in the 100th anniversary celebration on the morning of November 15, the school invited Ms. Alix Turolla Tardieu - granddaughter of Mr. Victor Tardieu, founder and first principal of the school; Mr. Arnaullt Fontani, great-grandson of sculptor Evariste Jonchere - second principal of the Indochina University of Fine Arts. Families of master painters and some principals through the periods such as To Ngoc Van, Tran Van Can, Tran Dinh Tho, Nguyen Thu, Nguyen Luong Tieu Bach, Le Anh Van, ... were all present at the celebration.
On this occasion, the school simultaneously organized 3 events marking important milestones for the glorious 100-year journey: 100+ Exhibition displaying typical specialized works of students of the Faculty of Painting, including 3 majors: lacquer, oil painting and silk, from October 31 to November 15, 2025 at the Museum of Vietnam University of Fine Arts, 42 Yet Kieu; Exhibition of 100 years of modern Vietnamese fine arts - Collection of Vietnam University of Fine Arts and Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts (from November 14 to 24, 2025 at the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts) and International Exhibition of Vietnam University of Fine Arts and friends (from November 14 to 24, 2025 at Art Space of Vietnam University of Fine Arts - 42 Yet Kieu).

Vietnam University of Fine Arts presented the first Victor Tardieu Prize, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, to seven students with excellent graduation papers in various majors and departments of Vietnam University of Fine Arts. The award ceremony took place at 9:30 a.m. on November 14 at the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts.
Responding to Tien Phong about public interaction activities, Dr. Ho Trong Minh said that the school opens the entire space for art lovers to answer all questions and curiosity about lacquer painting workshops, sculptures, silk paintings, printing workshops, etc. (except for the school's painting warehouse).
The first Vietnamese art works brought to the world in 1929 (in Paris, France) were 6 woodcuts by students of the Indochina Fine Arts College - the precursor to the later graphic design department. On this occasion, the printing workshop also exhibited ancient Dong Ho woodcuts. Visitors were given explanations and interacted with the artists to learn more about the famous art school.
The philosophy of inheriting and promoting the values of national culture and fine arts in studying the common aesthetic standards of humanity, European plastic arts science and the liberal philosophy has been passed down for the past 100 years. This philosophy has contributed to training a generation of master painters of modern Vietnamese fine arts such as: Nguyen Phan Chanh, To Ngoc Van, Le Pho, Nguyen Gia Tri, Tran Van Can, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Luong Xuan Nhi, Le Thi Luu ... These later painters have made important contributions to Vietnamese fine arts.
