During a field inspection of Khau Khe village with commune officials in early May 2026, we observed several points of embankment collapse along the road leading into the village, creating deep holes right at the edge of the road. More worryingly, in some sections, the soil beneath the concrete road surface had eroded, posing a risk of subsidence and endangering the safety of people and vehicles.
Not only in Khau Khe village, but also in Long Son village, serious landslides have occurred. Mr. Hoang Van Chien, Party Secretary and Head of Long Son village, said: There are 3 locations in the village with negative slope landslides. All landslide locations are on the main road of the village, and if not addressed promptly, the landslides could continue, disrupting traffic.
According to statistics from the People's Committee of Khanh Khe commune, there are currently 15 landslide locations in 10 villages within the commune, affecting over 900 households. The landslides mainly occur on negative slopes, steep terrain, and weak soil; many locations have shown signs of erosion and road subsidence.
The main cause of landslides is the impact of several prolonged periods of heavy rain in 2025, which saturated the soil and rocks with water, weakening the soil structure and causing it to lose its cohesion. In addition, many roads are built along hillsides with steep slopes, increasing the risk of landslides during heavy rains.
In response to the situation, the People's Committee of the commune proactively reviewed and compiled a list of landslide-prone areas, and mobilized local forces to implement temporary remedial measures such as: placing warning signs, staking out landslide areas, and clearing drainage ditches to limit the spread of landslides. For seriously affected landslide locations, the People's Committee of the commune reported and proposed to the Provincial People's Committee for financial support. On May 7, 2026, the Provincial People's Committee issued document No. 1096/UBND-KTCN to the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province proposing financial support from the Relief Fund to address several landslide locations in Khanh Khe commune. Specifically, it proposed 1.5 billion VND to address three seriously affected landslide locations, contributing to ensuring the safety of residents before the rainy season.
Mr. Hoang Van An, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Khanh Khe commune, said: Currently, many road sections in the commune are at risk of further landslides if heavy and prolonged rain occurs. Therefore, the early implementation of remedial measures to address damaged areas is essential to ensure the safety of residents, minimize traffic disruption, and prevent impacts on the lives and production of households in the area. In the coming time, the People's Committee of the commune will continue to coordinate with specialized agencies to inspect and assess the extent of the impact at each location to develop appropriate solutions. In addition, while waiting for the allocation of funds from the provincial relief fund, the commune government will use existing funds to address urgent landslide areas; at the same time, it will regularly monitor weather developments and proactively clear drainage ditches and waterways on roads at high risk of landslides.
By proactively reviewing and implementing initial remedial measures and promptly proposing funding support, Khanh Khe commune is striving to minimize the risk of landslides. It is known that the commune's People's Committee has completed the survey, developed a repair design plan, and expects to use commune funds to address serious landslide areas in May 2026. This will not only contribute to ensuring traffic safety but also help people feel secure in their daily lives and production activities before the rainy season.
