At locations with severe landslides, hundreds of tons of mud and rocks have been cleared and leveled to the sides of the road by construction units using specialized machinery. The cleanup work is being carried out urgently and decisively day and night to ensure traffic flow is restored as soon as possible.
According to a report from the Ho Chi Minh Highway Project Management Board, the investor of the North-South Expressway expansion project (Eastern section La Son - Hoa Lien), in late October, due to the impact of typhoons No. 12 and 13 and heavy rain across a wide area, landslides occurred on the embankment slopes at 21 locations along the entire route, with a landslide volume of approximately 146,000 m3, and a section of the road surface cracked at Km50 (approximately 70 m long).
To date, the clearing of landslide debris has been largely completed, and traffic can now resume normally. However, the area at Km42+700 still poses a risk of further landslides, so only one lane is currently open, and efforts are being focused on addressing this issue.

At kilometer marker 50+700 to 50+800, a landslide occurred on the embankment, damaging part of the road surface and causing the retaining wall on the negative slope to collapse. Currently, Larsen IV sheet piles have been driven to stabilize the roadbed on the positive slope, and a temporary concrete road has been constructed to ensure two-way traffic.
In the long term, the Ho Chi Minh Highway Project Management Board proposes a detailed survey of the topography, geology, and hydrology to select a stable solution. One option is to ensure temporary traffic flow by driving two rows of sheet piles within the landslide area, maintaining a roadbed width of approximately 9 meters from the edge of the embankment slope to serve as a temporary road during construction. A long-term design adjustment involves excavating the entire roadbed area within the landslide zone and replacing it with an elevated bridge.

During a comprehensive inspection of the La Son – Hoa Lien route on the afternoon of November 14th, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Tuong Van listened to reports on locations with high potential risks and generally agreed with the proposals of the Ho Chi Minh Highway Project Management Board. The Deputy Minister instructed the Ho Chi Minh Highway Project Management Board to coordinate with relevant agencies under the Ministry of Construction to continue surveying and researching suitable solutions to report to the Ministry. In addition, the project investor and contractors need to continue accelerating the progress of addressing and clearing landslides along the route, ensuring traffic safety for vehicles throughout the entire route.
The North-South Expressway expansion project (Eastern section, La Son – Hoa Lien) spans approximately 65 km, with a total investment of over 3,010 billion VND. Construction commenced in May 2025 and is expected to be completed in January 2026. To date, construction output has reached over 1,174 billion VND, achieving 46.2% of the contract value. However, the historic floods at the end of October 2025 caused serious landslides and damage along the entire route. Currently, the Ho Chi Minh Highway Project Management Board is calculating and reporting to the Ministry of Construction for approval of additional funding and allocation of capital to address the damage caused by the heavy rains…
