Getting into college early is not easy.

Foreign Trade University has just announced the admission score for high school transcripts for specialized students and excellent students at the provincial and city levels, the highest is 30 points, belonging to majors with international programs: Digital Marketing (Hanoi campus); Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Integrated Marketing Communications (HCMC campus). In the method of considering the results of the competency assessment exam, the highest score is 27.8 for the majors of Foreign Economics and International Trade. With the combined method, the highest score is 29.5 points for the major of Digital Marketing (international program). Statistics on international certificates, the total number of candidates with SAT scores from 1,530 passing is 196, from 1,550 is 77; especially, there are 2 candidates with an almost absolute SAT score of 1,590.

With a nearly perfect benchmark score of 29.9 for 3 subjects based on high school transcripts, the Banking Academy has a series of majors reaching this milestone, including Auditing, Banking, Digital Banking, Finance, Financial Technology, International Business, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and Economic Law. The school's Accounting major takes 29.8 points, and Investment Economics takes 29.3 points. The remaining majors range from 25.5 to 28.54 points. This score includes bonus points and priority points. For high-quality training programs, the admission score is calculated on a scale of 40, with Math doubled. The benchmark scores for majors in this training program range from 36 to 39.9 points.

According to the Admissions and Career Guidance Department of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, this year there are 5,791 candidates registered for the talent selection method. Of which, the leading in terms of benchmark scores is Data Science and Artificial Intelligence with 104.58/110 points, an increase of 6.16 points compared to last year. The remaining 4 majors in the top 5 are still Computer Science, Global ICT, Cybersecurity, and Computer Engineering (an increase of 13 - 20.7 benchmark scores compared to last year).

Major selection strategy and admission plan

Explaining why most majors have higher admission scores compared to last year, a representative of Hanoi University of Science and Technology said that the number of applications has nearly doubled, including many candidates with high achievements. On the other hand, this is also a group of majors with a large demand for human resources, attracting the attention of candidates.

The early admission door helps many candidates reduce pressure in the upcoming high school graduation exam, but for many other candidates, it is a worry, fear of losing the opportunity to enter the dream major because achieving a near-perfect score on the transcript or in the certificate exam, the ability assessment exam is not easy. Although the schools in the enrollment plan have clearly stated the quota for each admission method, in reality, there are still candidates who, despite having extremely high scores, still fail their first choice when considering admission.

In the 2023 - 2024 university admission season, the two top students of group A00 in the 2023 high school graduation exam with 29.35 points both failed their first choice, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, which is Computer Science. The reason is because this major has a standard score of 29.42 points according to the separate scoring formula at Hanoi University of Science and Technology: (Math x 2 + Subject 2 + Subject 3) x 3/4 + Priority points. This major accepts the combination A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry) and A01 (Math, Physics, English). Thus, both top students were 0.21 points short of passing their first choice. The two male students then passed their second choice, Computer Engineering (IT2) of the University with a standard score of 28.29.

Looking back at this story, we can see that being the top scorer in a decisive exam such as the high school graduation exam does not guarantee admission to university in the first choice, even if the admission is in the right combination required by the school. While not all candidates have the opportunity to participate in the admission process by different methods to the school, choosing which strategy and option to enter university for candidates this year and the following years is an important problem that needs to be carefully calculated early and have long-term preparation to achieve the best results.

Schools also note that early-admitted candidates must register their wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's common system from July 18 to 30. Candidates will officially be admitted and enrolled in schools after graduating from high school and set their first wish as the early admission result when registering on the Ministry's common virtual filtering system.
