When folk melodies step into a new space

From community activities, folk melodies have spread widely, from cultural tourist destinations, old towns, craft villages to schools and events... This suggests investing in a well-organized space for the performance and preservation of traditional Quang Nam's arts and culture.

More "space to shine" is needed.

In May, the Song Han Bài Chòi Club – part of the Da Nang City Cultural and Film Center – organized Bài Chòi performances for the community at the Da Nang Museum grounds (42 Bach Dang Street). The program initially attracted a large number of local people and tourists.

Artist Huyen Tan, head of the Song Han Bài Chòi Club, shared: “The club plans to pilot Bài Chòi festivals at the intersection of Quang Trung and Bach Dang streets, thereby creating an attraction for locals and tourists, generating a lively atmosphere along the Han River, alongside destinations such as APEC Park, Dragon Bridge, and the coastal area.”

In fact, the melodies of Quang Nam province, including folk songs, have been appearing more frequently in cultural and tourism events and at various destinations throughout the city in recent times. The performances aim for a cheerful and lively atmosphere to attract tourists.

Furthermore, many artists and artisans aspire to bring traditional music from Quang Nam province in general, and folk songs in particular, to a well-invested space.

By organizing Bài Chòi performances in public places, artists have suggested establishing a space for the melodies of Quang Nam province, including the folk songs. In Bài Chòi performances, many artists skillfully incorporate folk songs to create a fresh feel alongside the basic melodies such as: Xuân Nữ, Cổ Bản, Xàng Xê, and Hò Quảng. In some programs, folk song suites are performed that also include Lý Ngựa Ô, Lý Thượng, Du Xuân, Lý Hò Hê… These are popular folk songs in competitions, performances, and cultural and tourism activities.

All of these are traditional legacies of a region. To maximize their value, these legacies need to be disseminated, first to the local people, and then to domestic and international tourists in a well-organized setting.

"No matter how dedicated or talented an artist is, if the sound system is unreliable and the stage lighting is dim, the performance will lack both sound and visual appeal, negatively impacting the audience's experience," said artist Huyen Tan.

Sharing the same opinion, artist Thai Tau (Duy Xuyen Commune Public Service Center) suggested that localities and cities should create more practical "stages" for traditional art forms, not only at major festivals but also in daily life. In particular, there needs to be a combination of traditional art with digital technology to promote it more widely to all segments of the population.

Forming a "flow" of culture within the community.

Artist Thai Tau believes that the most important thing is to build folk song clubs in the community, where artisans and people can interact directly; to introduce folk songs into schools for teaching and for students to experience; and to promote and perform them at tourism events, helping Quang Nam folk songs remain vibrant and unleash the strongest spiritual value of this art form.

At the same time, there should be more preferential policies and greater attention given to artisans and artists who are dedicated to preserving, transmitting, and promoting this art form.

According to artist Huyen Tan, in recent times, she and many other artists have collaborated with schools to introduce and perform Bai Choi at the Folk Culture Festival. Here, the melodies are used in a way that is easily accessible to students.

Artist Huyen Tan said that recently, she had the opportunity to work with the Vietnam Institute of Music to support the institution in researching and preserving the melodies of Quang Nam province, including folk songs. Many artists and musicians are expected to participate in recording and filming to create long-term archival materials, not only for today but also for future generations.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, with the orientation of "Returning to the Original," Da Nang is developing a system of tourism products in depth and breadth, taking the identity of traditional cultural values as its foundation. In this, traditional melodies, including folk songs, are an integral part of this identity.
