Public opinion has been buzzing these past few days about an open letter written by Mr. Dinh Phu Cuong - Principal of Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) on the occasion of November 20.
The letter roughly stated that every year, on Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20, the school receives many flower baskets and cakes to congratulate. However, these flowers and cakes are only used for one day and then thrown away, which is a waste.
This year, the school hopes that instead of giving flowers and cakes, businesses and parents will donate 98 student health insurance cards (each card worth 680,400 VND) for the school to distribute to disadvantaged students for use within 12 months of 2024.
This is an open letter that makes me feel moved because it "confesses" a reality: People today, even in a big city like Ho Chi Minh City, still have many difficult circumstances to the point where they cannot even buy their children a health insurance card for less than 700,000 VND.
This difficulty is also a common reality for parents in many schools in localities across the country.
And the difficulties of parents are not only reflected in the fact that students cannot pay for health insurance, but also in the shortage of books, school supplies, uniforms, etc.
It's just that no one has ever spoken up to "complain" and "ask" for gifts for their students like principal Dinh Phu Cuong.
I have never seen anyone as "brave" as Mr. Dinh Phu Cuong to write an open letter asking to exchange cakes and flowers for health insurance cards for students on a somewhat sensitive occasion, Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20.
Of course, Mr. Dinh Phu Cuong's open letter was enthusiastically supported by philanthropists and parents. The proof is that after only 2 days of distributing the open letter, the school received 200 insurance cards even though it only asked for 98 cards, and stopped "asking" for gifts.
"With the remaining cards, we will ask for permission to keep them for this Lunar New Year to give gifts to the 98 disadvantaged students mentioned above so that they can have a complete and meaningful Tet," said Mr. Cuong.
With the open letter and the unexpected gifts, this year's November 20th will be a very special, beautiful and meaningful Vietnamese Teachers' Day for teachers and students of Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School in general and 98 students and their families in particular.
And this special, beautiful, meaningful atmosphere is also spread in the educational environment of Ho Chi Minh City and the whole country like a breath of good wind.
It shows that the effectiveness of education sometimes comes not only from good words and ideas but also from the courageous actions of teachers, all for the sake of students.
