Fake news explodes on social media

Within a decade, social networks have gone from being just a place for users to share photos and update statuses to becoming the "stage" for countless unverified stories.

The speed at which fake news spreads is what makes it so dangerous: it only takes one post from one account and a few shares for the information to spiral out of control and find its way into the conversations of millions of people.

Many users believe that they are sober enough to deal with fake news, but the reality shows the opposite. False news is often wrapped in strong emotions, anger, sympathy, indignation… making it easy for viewers to ignore the step of checking the source.

Social media algorithms favor controversial content, unintentionally pushing it higher in the news feed. The more people see it, the more it is believed, and the cycle continues.

The consequences go beyond misunderstanding an event. In many places around the world , including Vietnam, fake news has damaged personal reputations, disrupted business operations, created social disorder, and even influenced policy decisions.

This reality reminds us that we are living in an era where every piece of information we receive needs to be re-evaluated before we believe and share it.

Identify fake news created with generative AI technology

While fake news used to be created by distorting the truth, AI technology (from text, images to videos ) has now turned creating misinformation into a much faster, cheaper and harder to detect process.

Realistic photos are created in seconds, deepfake videos simulate human voices and faces to the point of being difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. Many internet users have witnessed images of politicians appearing in places they have never been, businesses being fabricated with statements, or ordinary people being placed in completely unreal situations. The products of generative AI act as a kind of “technological camouflage”, turning false information into reasonable information and making it difficult for viewers to doubt.

However, fake news created by AI still leaves certain traces. Unnatural eyes, extra fingers, small details in lighting, body proportions or overly perfect, emotionless words… are all signs of recognition.

Additionally, many platforms have now begun to incorporate AI-generated content detection tools, but recognition capabilities have yet to keep up with the pace of technological advancement.

This context requires social media users to form a habit: always ask “who created this information?”, “why is it appearing at this time?”, “is there any official source to confirm it?”… In a world where AI can create an “alternative truth”, it is the sobriety of social media users that becomes the most important shield.
