The 80K6KS1 Phoenix-1 airborne surveillance radar is considered a “rare” of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. However, recently released images show that this “rare” system was destroyed by a Russian Lancet suicide drone.
According to SF, it is not clear exactly when and where the radar was attacked. However, a video of the attack was released to the media on June 29. The video shows a Lancet suicide drone attacking the radar's main antenna and destroying it.
The Phoenix-1 radar was developed by Ukraine's state-owned Iskra Research and Production Establishment. It was first introduced in 2021, less than a year before Russia began its special military operation in Ukraine.
This 3D airborne surveillance radar is said to have a range of up to 400km and is designed to be compatible with Soviet-made Buk-M1 medium-range air defense systems. It can reportedly be integrated with other Soviet and even Western systems.
The Lancet suicide drone was developed by ZALA Aero, a subsidiary of Russian defense giant Kalashnikov Concern.
The company produces two versions of the suicide drone: the Izdeliye-52 with a 30-minute endurance and a 1kg warhead, and the larger Izdeliye-51 with a 40-minute endurance and equipped with a 3kg warhead.
The Lancet suicide drone flies towards the designated area using an inertial navigation system with GLONASS support. Once in the area, the operator uses the onboard electro-optical system via a two-way data link to detect, track and lock on the target. A laser rangefinder then controls the detonation of the warhead.
The drone’s small radar cross-section and minimal infrared signature make it difficult to detect and intercept. Ukrainian attempts to stop the Lancet with anti-aircraft fire, electronic warfare, or other countermeasures have been largely unsuccessful.
According to Lostarmour.info, a website that tracks and records military losses, the Russian military has so far used Lancet suicide drones to destroy or damage 106 radars and communications systems used by Kiev forces. That number only includes attacks and destruction that have been verified by video.
