On January 15th, at the launch ceremony of "Community Tree Planting Day 2026," the "Bamboo for Flood Control" program was also officially launched; this is also considered a "green" solution to help prevent floods at their source.
TreeBank's "Bamboo for Flood Control" project aims to reforest 200 hectares of bamboo in river basins, stream banks, foothills, and floodplains in western Nghe An province during the period 2026-2028.
Speaking about the bamboo planting project to combat flooding, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang, Director of TreeBank, emphasized: “Choosing bamboo as a green infrastructure solution is based on the scientific understanding that bamboo, with its root system's superior ability to hold soil and retain water, acts as a natural shield to limit and reduce damage from floods and landslides. This solution helps protect villages and opens up sustainable livelihood opportunities for ethnic minority communities in upstream areas.”
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang, based on the practical experience of recent years, with continuous storms and floods, coupled with increasingly unpredictable climate change, solutions are needed to adapt. Based on scientific principles, bamboo has a strong root system that can penetrate deep into the soil, making it suitable for planting in sloping areas, and it can hold and compact the soil. Furthermore, planting bamboo is not only about reforestation, increasing forest cover and area, but also about creating an ecosystem linked to state planning, combining the indigenous knowledge of the people with scientific knowledge in care, protection, and impact assessment…
The project is also based on a community-centered approach, not only supporting the community with seedlings for reforestation but also creating value from the trees. Bamboo is not only planted to provide products such as shoots but can also be harvested for its stalks after about 4 years; creating livelihoods for the people and developing forest resources.
"The project has received tremendous support from relevant entities such as local authorities, the people, forest rangers, national parks, and biosphere reserves… This collaboration is also a measure to increase the capacity to adapt to natural disasters and climate change in the future," Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang emphasized.
Currently, the project has established bamboo nurseries and collaborates with other units to implement and register the varieties. All bamboo varieties being propagated meet standards of 2-3 generations or more; thus, they will develop faster and more sustainably. When implementing the project, those who receive bamboo under the project must commit to a certain number of years before harvesting, a certain percentage of the trees to be harvested, and the harvesting season, etc.
Going forward, the program will continue to expand bamboo planting to other areas, based on local forest planning to ensure suitability.
