As a communications professional, Ms. Phuong Thao observes that in reality, the use of English mixed with Vietnamese is very common in everyday communication. However, speakers need to exercise restraint; overuse can become off-putting. A worrying issue is that young people are exposed to digital technology and AI, so their thinking seems pre-programmed, resulting in presentations and daily communication feeling empty and lacking depth.
According to Ms. Phuong Thao, "blunt language" is often mistakenly perceived as a way to express personality and a trendy style. This misconception makes the listener feel disrespected.
A Vietnamese language teacher recounted that the increasingly common phenomenon in daily communication—the indiscriminate mixing of the mother tongue with foreign languages—has eroded the purity of the Vietnamese language. People appearing on television also speak a mix of Vietnamese and foreign languages, including sports presenters.
The value of foreign language proficiency in the context of international integration is undeniable, but a clear distinction must be made between language competence and the habit of unrestrained expression. Ms. Do Dang Minh Dieu, Principal of Ai Nghia Kindergarten (Dai Loc commune), believes that if used appropriately, at the right time and place, and with careful selection, foreign languages can support work and public communication more effectively, without diminishing the value of the Vietnamese language. In propaganda and education efforts, authorities should encourage increased use of Vietnamese.
Mr. Do Huu Tung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Song Kon commune, expressed that using foreign languages in communication is an essential requirement in the context of integration, but it must be based on respecting and preserving the purity of the Vietnamese language. Abusing and mixing Vietnamese with foreign languages arbitrarily and without standards, especially in public environments, media, and basic education, not only causes offense but also affects the awareness and language habits of the younger generation.
“As a local government body, we believe that officials, civil servants, non-professional workers, and teachers must set an example by using Vietnamese correctly, clearly, and coherently in their work and daily communication. Proficiency in foreign languages is necessary, but it should not come at the expense of neglecting one's mother tongue. Preserving the Vietnamese language means preserving the cultural identity and fundamental values of the community,” Mr. Tung affirmed.
Mr. Huynh The Toan, Head of the Party Building Committee of Phu Thuan commune, acknowledged that the use of a "half-Western, half-Vietnamese" style of language sounds offensive, pretentious, lacks popular appeal, and fails to fully convey its intended purpose. The Vietnamese language is the cultural identity and national pride of Vietnam. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain and promote the movement to "preserve the purity of the Vietnamese language"; at the same time, boycott the arbitrary use of language, especially in education and public spaces.
