Thanh Huong is loved by the audience through the role of Luyen in the movie "Life is still beautiful" by director Danh Dung.

Sharing with Giao Thong Newspaper, she confided about the behind-the-scenes of filming and accepting to play ugly, tragic roles.

I was lucky to be chosen.

From Nuong in “Thuong nho o ai”, to Lan in “Quynh bup be”, Le in “Mua hoa tim lai” and Luyen in “Cuoc doi van dep sao”, the characters Thanh Huong plays almost all have special fates, why is that?

As someone who likes challenges and wants to grow and mature every day, I want changes.

When I receive roles with such fates, I also have to think about how to create a unique color for each role. How can the audience not recognize the color that has been mixed in somewhere through each role?

When working with VFC projects, I also completely trust the team's calculations and accept immediately, without thinking too much. I feel lucky to be chosen for these roles.

Luyen is a character with a different fate from the lives of Lan, Le or Nuong. The character's story is very interesting right from the start, the actor's job is to find unique traits, personalities, and ways of telling stories for each character.

Do you honestly like these types of roles, especially when you are naturally beautiful but are often made ugly on screen?

For me, any role must be interesting to have the motivation to strive and try my best for the role. There are roles whose identities and appearances may not be beautiful, but they certainly have beautiful souls.

I'm not afraid of being ugly and never afraid of making myself ugly in exchange for a good role, a beautiful character, conveying a beautiful message.

I think that roles with a good life and a good future have nothing for us to play anymore, the audience no longer expects much. With roles like Le, Luyen or a female lead, it must be a character with a destiny. More or less, that is a story outside of life, our life.

Artists like me will be the bridge to convey humane messages to the audience, through characters. Regardless of whether they are at the bottom of society, at the end of pain, people still look forward to a brighter tomorrow. If given the choice, I would definitely choose such roles.

No real bruises, very hard to succeed

Playing the role of a poor worker, besides your appearance, is your health affected?

Luckily, while filming this movie, I was still in good health and held on until the end. I lost about 5kg but still maintained my physical strength. Sometimes people were worried about me being too skinny, because almost all the scenes had to be acted out for real, carrying real boxes, not props.

Films like this, if not done for real, without real bruises, real tension, real pressure, are very difficult to succeed. So when I was filming, I didn't feel tired, and if I did, the feeling passed very quickly.

Actually, it wasn’t just me, the director required all the actors to do so to show the hardship of the workers. We still joked with each other that the first criteria for actors in this film must be health, not good acting. The actors also surpassed themselves, doing things they had never done before.

What do you like most about the role of Luyen?

Luyen has many characteristics that I like. Luyen is a very smart girl, and within that intelligence there is also honesty. She is so honest, but when she goes out to earn money, she is very devious, and at home she is also very devious to live in the city, struggling to make ends meet.

In love, she is a trusting person, loves with all her heart. Even with her love for Mrs. Tinh - her mother-in-law, it is very pure and also very real. She also hates and has resentment, she also gets frustrated when people hurt her. A very real person, simple and sincere, but also has enough clever calculations. But in essence, Luyen is a good person. I like straightforward and sincere things like Luyen, this is also somewhere in myself.

On set, how do you and the cast like Meritorious Artist Thanh Quy and Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai interact and support each other?

When you look at Meritorious Artist Thanh Quy, Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai or the actors in the film, you will see the energy they radiate. I see Hai's careful consideration, and Quy's love for the role, considering the role more than herself.

I saw the meticulous dedication of Binh and Dien. Especially the “captain” - director Danh Dung. He went barefoot, bareheaded even though it was raining. He ran in to pull each crate, carry each basket of fruit so that the actors could see, feel and see that working life was like that. Because not all of us have experienced such a life.

Seeing everyone working hard, I don't feel tired. I even think that if I weren't an actor, I could be a porter. Life with the working people is now as close and familiar as my own breath.

“Life is still beautiful” - many people tell me that

Besides the efforts of the entire crew, do the poor workers in the small hamlet under Long Bien bridge give you much to think about?

It is true that if we had not made this film, we do not know when we would have understood the lives of the working people here. We work hard to make films, but how can we compare to the lives of the working people? They work much harder than us.

In that market, there were old people, young people, and children. Every time we came to film, we would give a boy some cakes and food. There were days when the crew was off filming, and the next day when I saw the boy again, he looked sad. I asked him about it, and the boy said that because the crew was off, he missed them. His words were very innocent but I will always remember them.

Or when I listen to people's confidences, I feel extremely happy. In the morning, they ask about me and give me pieces of cake. In the evening, when they see that I haven't come home yet, they also ask about me. I am extremely touched when people say thank you because the movie is so good, the image of the workers is so beautiful.

One day, while filming near a couple’s house, they told me: “Honey, sometimes I get home from work so tired! So tired that I don’t even want to pick up chopsticks to eat. But when I turn on the TV and watch “Life is still beautiful”, all of a sudden I feel the tiredness disappear. I feel so happy about life!”. I am so happy!

Thanks!
