"Meeting Laos in the first matches was a coincidence that brought luck to the Vietnamese team. Hopefully that will help U23 Vietnam successfully defend the U23 Southeast Asian championship," Khuat Van Khang shared after the victory over U23 Laos on the evening of July 19.
In the opening match of Group B of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Finals, U23 Vietnam defeated U23 Laos 3-0. Khuat Van Khang scored the opening goal in the first half.
As a player who has participated in many Asian youth tournaments and is currently playing for the national team, Van Khang is one of the most experienced players in the current U23 Vietnam squad. The midfielder born in 2003 was a member of the 2024 ASEAN Cup champion, where the Vietnamese team faced Laos in the opening match (winning 4-1).
Previously in 2018, the Vietnamese team also met Laos in the opening match of the AFF Cup campaign (won 3-0) and then won the Southeast Asian championship.
Winning Laos and then winning the Southeast Asian championship is the fate of the Vietnamese team that Khuat Van Khang hopes will happen with the U23 team.
Returning to the victory over U23 Laos on Indonesia's field, Van Khang was trusted to wear the captain's armband and played the entire match.
Not only did he play the role of hero with a beautiful opening goal to help U23 Vietnam break the deadlock in the 19th minute, he also created many opportunities for his teammates.
With a big win against U23 Laos, U23 Vietnam only needs to avoid losing to U23 Cambodia in the next match to secure a ticket to the semi-finals of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 tournament as the top team in Group B.
In the next match (also the last match of Group B), U23 Vietnam will play U23 Cambodia at 8:00 p.m. on July 22.
