"We beat Laos in the opening match of the ASEAN Cup and then won the championship. Hopefully, U23 Vietnam will repeat that in this year's tournament," Khuat Van Khang hopes that the victory over Laos will help U23 Vietnam defend the championship.
Vietnam U23 won 3-0 against Laos U23 in the opening match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, which took place on the evening of July 19. Van Khang opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Hieu Minh scored twice in the 70th and 83rd minutes, sealing the victory for coach Kim Sang-sik's team.
Talking about the match, Van Khang shared: "The first match is always difficult. U23 Vietnam tried very hard and finally overcame it. I am happy to have scored a goal for the team and will try harder in each match to develop myself."
This was a match in which U23 Vietnam completely controlled the game, but faced many difficulties against the crowded and focused defense of U23 Laos. It was not until the opponent lost strength in the second half that the red team took advantage of the space to score two more goals, closing out the complete victory on the opening day.
"Each tournament is different, the participating teams are all strong. U23 Vietnam needs to try every match to aim for the goal of successfully defending the championship," the player of The Cong Viettel highly appreciated the opponents in this tournament.
With 3 points and a goal difference of +3, U23 Vietnam temporarily leads Group B. In the final match, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will meet U23 Cambodia on July 22 to decide the ticket to the semi-finals.
