Changes from sustainable investment
According to Mr. Hoang Van Kien, Vice Principal in charge of Hong Phong Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (Hong Phong Commune, Lang Son Province), gradually completing the facilities at this highland school is not easy.
However, thanks to the attention of all levels and sectors, many items have been upgraded. In 2024, the school was recognized as meeting national standards level 1 and educational quality assessment level 2 - an important milestone recognizing the many years of efforts of the teaching staff.
Currently, Hong Phong Ethnic Boarding Secondary School has 8 common classrooms, 8 subject rooms, 1 computer room, 2 libraries and a system of functional rooms serving management and teaching activities. The boarding area is scientifically arranged with a dining room, kitchen, clean water system and separate toilets for male and female students. This is an essential condition to help students living far away have a safe and hygienic place to live.
Teaching equipment has met the requirements for grades 6 and 7 according to the 2018 General Education Program. However, equipment for grades 8 and 9 is still lacking; some subject rooms such as English, Art, and Social Sciences do not have enough specialized equipment. Playgrounds, exercise areas, and experience areas also need more investment to meet the goal of comprehensive education.
According to Mr. Kien, the school currently lacks teachers trained in the role of Team Leader - an important position in organizing collective activities. Some teachers have to be transferred to other units, affecting professional stability. Many desks and chairs are old, more than 60% are no longer suitable for students' physical condition, affecting their health and psychology when participating in learning.
The students' difficulties are even greater when many of them live far from school (4 to 6 km away), not eligible for boarding school under the new regulations; many of them have to help their families with farming, some of them grow up in circumstances where their parents are divorced, so they lack attention, easily fall into the mentality of being bored with studying and dropping out of school.
Digital transformation: A journey of many efforts
Despite many limitations, Hong Phong Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities still persists in implementing digital transformation. In the school's computer room, although the equipment has been used for many years, this is still the place where students get acquainted with computers and initially approach information technology.
The school has actively deployed and implemented digital transformation in management and teaching from the 2022-2023 school year. The school has effectively used platforms such as VnEdu, Zoom, Google Meet... to organize teaching, professional activities and online meetings.
100% of teachers are trained and proficient in using these tools, ensuring the maintenance of learning, professional exchange, testing and evaluation in all conditions. Teachers' qualifications and skills in designing electronic lectures and exploiting online learning materials are increasingly improved.
What we always aim for is to build a safe, happy school where every student is loved and has the opportunity to develop comprehensively.
Mr. Hoang Van Kien, Vice Principal of the school

“However, the equipment for digital teaching is not yet synchronized; many projectors, computers, and interactive TVs have degraded. Most students do not have equipment to study online at home, leading to limitations in accessing digital lectures. Digital transformation is an inevitable trend, but in mountainous areas like Hong Phong, we have to go slowly but surely,” Mr. Kien shared.
To improve the effectiveness of digital transformation and meet educational goals, Mr. Kien wants to invest in more functional rooms, boarding areas, cafeterias, toilets; repair electricity and water systems, playgrounds, training grounds and build multi-purpose houses for collective activities. At the same time, it is necessary to equip teaching equipment according to the new program, from projectors, computers, interactive TVs to practice equipment, printers and boarding living supplies.
“The school wants poor students to be supported with smart learning devices to narrow the digital gap,” Mr. Kien proposed.
According to Mr. Kien, socialization continues to be an important resource to help the school improve the learning environment and maintain student support programs. The school aims to improve the quality of comprehensive education through moral education, life skills, capacity development, student qualities and building a "safe - happy - creative" environment.
"The teaching staff is professionally trained, teaching methods are innovated, and life skills education, career guidance and extracurricular activities are enhanced, especially for students in difficult circumstances.
In boarding, the school focuses on improving the quality of meals, ensuring better living conditions and hygiene. Mobilizing social resources to support poor students is implemented regularly and effectively," Mr. Kien emphasized.
