Dong Thap Architecture: Preserving Identity, Creating the Future

In the context of innovation in administrative management models and regional space development, the merger of Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces has created a major turning point for planning, construction and professional organization. Therefore, the role of architects is becoming more and more important. Reporters from Ap Bac Newspaper and Tien Giang Radio and Television Station had an interview with Mr. Vo Minh Tien, Chairman of the Young Architects Club of Tien Giang Province (now Dong Thap Province), about the development process and orientation in the upcoming transformation period.

* Reporter (PV): Sir, can you share the outstanding achievements of the Young Architects Club of Tien Giang province (before the merger) in recent years?

* Mr. Vo Minh Tien: The Tien Giang Province Young Architects Club (abbreviated as the Club) was established on December 23, 2023, under the Tien Giang Province Architects Association, a member of the Southwest Region Young Architects Club, with the motto of creating a playground, connecting and exchanging expertise, and improving the professional quality of young architects in the province.

As one of the young clubs, formed later than other provinces nationwide, but in recent times, the club has successfully fulfilled its role of guiding young architects in the province, creating opportunities for architects to exchange, visit and learn from experiences in all provinces and cities, participate in continuous professional training courses, seminars, and study to improve professional qualifications (postgraduate courses)...

In addition, the Club has also participated with the Provincial Association of Architects in the role of contributing professional opinions and constructive criticism to a number of projects...

* Reporter: In your opinion, what are the difficulties and challenges that the local architecture industry is facing?

* Mr. Vo Minh Tien: In my opinion, the difficulties and challenges that the local architecture industry is facing will lie in two main issues: Common challenges and difficulties of the world architecture industry in general and Vietnam in particular regarding design solutions, planning, material use... to adapt to climate change that tends to increase rapidly.

To fulfill the pioneering role in the general orientation of the national design industry, which is to design based on the foundation of local identity values, in order to do this well, in addition to having a firm grasp of professional knowledge, architects need to invest, conduct in-depth research, and have a comprehensive view of fields such as culture, economy, society, etc.

* Reporter: Regarding the merger of the two provinces of Tien Giang and Dong Thap, how do you think this will impact architectural and planning activities?

* Mr. Vo Minh Tien: Not only Tien Giang - Dong Thap province after the merger, but most provinces across the country will have many changes and adjustments in terms of planning, from provincial administrative boundaries to wards and communes, development orientation goals will also change to suit the new orientation.

From there, the zoning plans, regional connections, centers, points, dynamic areas, etc. will also have corresponding changes and adjustments. This will be the time when architectural and planning activities are given more attention and play a more essential role in development orientations.

* Reporter: With the characteristics of river terrain, what architectural direction is needed for the merged Tien Giang - Dong Thap area?

* Mr. Vo Minh Tien: The perfect combination of two lands with strengths in river terrain with large rivers and a dense network of canals, rich alluvium, fertile agriculture... promises to bring more emotions and ideas to the province's architectural and planning designers.

However, the most effective and suitable direction is still sustainable, close architecture, responding to climate change on the basis of local identity and culture. Architectural designs and planning should closely follow and promote local factors, characteristics of rivers, thereby providing solutions close to river nature, friendly to the environment and the inherent landscape and ecosystem system.

In addition, the research to combine the use of current materials and the introduction of local material sources into the project is also a factor that needs to be focused on, both to take advantage of and save costs, while bringing harmony and promoting traditional values, aiming at the unique identity of the locality.

* Reporter: What is the Club's orientation for the period 2025 - 2030, especially after the administrative space is expanded?

* Mr. Vo Minh Tien: In the period of 2025 - 2030, especially after the administrative space is expanded, the role and tasks of the provincial architects need to be more focused. In the immediate future, the Club will coordinate and ask for opinions from the Provincial Architects Association on organizing the Provincial Architects Association Congress after the merger in accordance with the spirit and guidance from the Central Committee of the Vietnam Architects Association, as well as relevant agencies, departments and branches in accordance with the prescribed procedures.

At the same time, the Club continues to connect with the Young Architects Club of the region as well as clubs from provinces and cities in supporting, training, and fostering professional knowledge for young architects, with special attention to modern design trends and taking the preservation and promotion of local identity as the foundation.

* Reporter: For young architects, what recommendations do you have during this period of many changes?

* Mr. Vo Minh Tien: In this period of many changes, not only the Architecture and Planning industry but all industries will have a relatively large transformation. But it must be clearly recognized that this is a positive general transformation. Although there will be many difficulties for the industry in the immediate future, it will truly open up more opportunities for the design force, especially the young architects will have the opportunity to express themselves, to demonstrate the passion and enthusiasm of youth in the general transition period of the country.

* Reporter: In your opinion, how can we promote local identity when administrative space is expanded?

* Mr. Vo Minh Tien: Regarding promoting local identity in architecture and planning of Tien Giang - Dong Thap province after the merger, this issue will not be affected much by the expanded administrative space but lies in the awareness and thinking of the professional workforce, especially the team of architects.

Because we are located in the Southwest region, the provinces are under relatively similar influence and impact, the ecosystem, culture, and economy also have certain similarities and close connections, along with some characteristics of each region.

Therefore, promoting local identity in design and planning options is only truly effective when there is in-depth and thorough research, traditional values, heritages, and relics are properly assessed, effectively preserved, and conserved... This will be the foundation and premise for the application and maximum promotion of local identity in the coming time.

* Reporter: Thank you!
