Experience from mango bagging in Yen Chau

Việt NamViệt Nam23/04/2024

Yen Chau is a locality with a large mango area of over 3,200 hectares; mainly Taiwanese, Thai, Australian and local round mango varieties. Every year, over 60% of the mango area in the district is covered with fruit. After many years of implementing fruit covering, many gardeners have gained a lot of experience, bringing higher efficiency.

Farmers in Sap Vat commune cover mangoes.

Currently, on the market there are many types of bags produced from many different materials such as: foam bags, nylon bags used for guava bags; paper bags, cloth bags used for mango bags; mesh bags used for longan bags... These bag products are imported and produced domestically. Depending on the budget and growth characteristics of the crop, farmers can choose the appropriate type of bag, avoiding the situation where farmers use specialized bags for this type of fruit tree for another type of fruit tree.

For mango trees, depending on the variety, there will be different types of bags. Most mango growers in Yen Chau district apply fruit bagging for grafted mango varieties such as Thai, Australian, and Taiwanese mangoes. In addition to reducing damage caused by pests and diseases, the bags also help increase the ability of photosynthesis and pigment conversion of the fruit, thereby increasing weight and giving the fruit a beautiful color.

Members of the Chieng Hac Safe Agricultural Cooperative wrap Taiwanese mangoes in colored paper bags to create a yellow skin.

Five years ago, the Chieng Hac Safe Agriculture Cooperative applied the fruit wrapping method to over 80 hectares of Taiwanese mangoes. With an output of about 900 tons of fruit/year, the fruit wrapping technique was applied, the selling price was 10,000-18,000 VND/kg; the main consumption market was in major provinces and cities and exported to countries such as China, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, USA, Japan, etc.

This year's weather has been unusual, with hot weather occurring during the mango fruiting season, reducing the cooperative's mango output by about 30%. Therefore, the cooperative is encouraging members to focus on monitoring the growth of the trees and proactively source irrigation water. In particular, the method of covering the entire area with fruit is applied to ensure the quality of the fruit, meeting market and export demands.

Ms. Ha Thi Chinh, a member of the Chieng Hac Safe Agriculture Cooperative, said: With 2 hectares of mango, in the past, the family often prevented pests by using many types of pesticides, which was not only costly, but also unavoidable. Since joining the cooperative, the family has been instructed on fruit wrapping techniques to prevent pests. Thanks to that, the mangoes have a more beautiful appearance and better quality, the percentage of grade 1 mangoes accounts for 70%, and the selling price is higher than that of unwrapped mangoes. Each year, the mango garden harvests nearly 30 tons of fruit, earning more than 250 million VND.

Currently, the mangoes have been bearing fruit for 40 days, and Ms. Chinh's family is urgently covering the fruit to avoid adverse weather conditions. Over many years of selling mango products, depending on each market, Ms. Chinh applies different fruit covering methods such as: for the Chinese market, which prefers Taiwanese and Australian mangoes with dark green color, they use white cloth or paper bags; for the American market, which prefers yellow mangoes, they use 2-layer paper bags (yellow on the outside, charcoal black on the inside)...

Mangoes will be fruit-wrapped by farmers after 35-40 days of fruit set.

Also one of the communes actively applying fruit bagging techniques for mangoes, these days, walking along Phat and Boong Xanh villages of Chieng Pan commune, you will see farmers bagging mangoes, and mango gardens covered in white specialized mango bags.

For more than 3 years, Mr. Hoang Van Minh, Phat village, Chieng Pan commune has applied the fruit wrapping method to his family's 2.2 hectares of Taiwanese mangoes. Mr. Minh said: Recently, the family has mainly used fabric fruit wrapping produced by domestic units at an average price of 900 VND/wrap. On average, each crop, I use 20,000 fabric bags to wrap the fruit. The advantages of this type of bag are that it is tough, durable, airy and drains water, allowing you to observe the development process and the color inside the fruit; the bag can be reused after 2-3 crops. The fruit grows well, with an average weight of 1.2-1.5 kg per fruit, and a maximum of 1.8 kg. The family's mango garden is expected to yield 12 tons this year.

Promoting the benefits of fruit bagging, Chieng Pan commune is currently promoting and transferring fruit bagging techniques and methods to keep bags durable, helping farmers reduce costs. At the same time, the commune holds meetings with local production groups, works with mango bagging agents to provide bags before the season or pay 50% of the cost in advance so that farmers can produce in this form, guiding mango producers to follow a clean, safe model to meet market demand.

Mango orchards in Phat village, Chieng Pan commune are covered to protect the fruit from the effects of weather and pests.

Every year, more than 60% of the mango area in Yen Chau district is covered with fruit. Being proactive in caring for and covering fruit, Yen Chau's mango products are well received by many markets. In 2023, over 15,140 tons of mangoes were consumed in the domestic market, 2,190 tons of fruit were exported to foreign markets. It is expected that in 2024, the district will consume and export 15,000 tons of mangoes.

Mr. Lai Huu Hung, Deputy Head of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: In fact, applying the method of covering mangoes, the number of times of spraying pesticides to prevent pests and diseases is reduced by about 50%, even if the weather is favorable, no pesticides need to be sprayed. In addition, using fruit bags reduces the penetration of fungi, prevents rough fruit skin and black spots, helps increase productivity by 20-30% and increases fruit quality, prolongs the storage time by 3-5 days compared to normal and sells for 5,000-8,000 VND/kg higher than unwrapped mangoes. The district strives for 80% of the mango area in the area to be covered, ensuring consumption and export standards.

Mango bagging contributes to creating safe products, protecting the health of producers and consumers, improving quality and income for mango growers, and increasingly affirming the Yen Chau mango brand.
