Vi Thi Hang is currently one of the outstanding athletes of the Vietnamese Paralympic Swimming Team. At the 13th ASEAN Para Games, even though only halfway through, the female swimmer has already demonstrated her abilities by winning 3 gold medals and breaking the Games record twice, leaving a strong mark on the swimming arena.
On January 23rd, Vi Thi Hang delivered a dominant performance in the women's 100m backstroke final, disability category S6–S7. With consistent form, the Vietnamese athlete easily finished first, winning the gold medal with a time of 1 minute 43 seconds 20, simultaneously breaking the Games record (the previous record was 1 minute 51 seconds 44).
But that wasn't Vi Thi Hang's only impressive performance at this year's Games. Earlier on January 21st, the 36-year-old athlete shone brightly, winning two gold medals in the women's 100m freestyle (S7 disability category) and the women's 50m backstroke (S6-S7 disability category). Notably, in the women's 50m backstroke (S6-S7 disability category), the swimmer brilliantly broke the Games record with a time of 45.13 seconds (the previous record was 49.63 seconds).

This is not her first time competing in regional arenas; Vi Thi Hang has repeatedly asserted her position, breaking the Southeast Asian record nine times. With over 10 years dedicated to professional sports , the athlete from Thanh Hoa province boasts an impressive record of nearly 70 medals, including over 50 gold medals at domestic and international competitions, becoming the Golden Girl of Vietnamese Paralympic Sports.
But behind those prestigious medals lies a journey of overcoming adversity for this young girl. Tragedy struck Vi Thi Hang at the age of 3 when a polio fever caused her legs to atrophy, leaving only her arms intact. However, the female athlete never allowed herself to surrender to fate.
In 2012, while taking swimming lessons to improve her health, she revealed a special talent and quickly mastered the movements after only 3 months of training. In her first participation in the National Paralympic Championships, Vi Thi Hang won 5 gold medals (3 individual, 2 relay), marking a crucial turning point in her professional sports career. Since then, swimming has not only been a passion but also a path for Vi Thi Hang to overcome her limitations and bring glory to her country.
At the 13th ASEAN Para Games, Vi Thi Hang aims to maintain the achievements she attained at the 12th ASEAN Para Games, so that the Vietnamese national anthem can be played alongside the red flag with a yellow star, a source of pride. With her consistent performance, willpower, and determination, the female swimmer is expected to continue winning gold medals, contributing to the overall success of the Vietnamese Paralympic Team and affirming the position of Vietnamese Paralympic swimming in the regional sporting arena.
