Vo Hoang Quan is one of two Vietnamese players participating in the 2025 World Amateur Chess Championship in Serbia. The event is organized in three groups, for players with international Elo ratings under 1700, under 2000 and under 2300 (including the Open and Women's groups), bringing together about 300 players from more than 50 countries. All events are standard chess competitions, taking place in the 9-round Swiss format.
In this tournament, Vo Hoang Quan – from Hanoi with an international Elo rating of 1997, competed in the group for players with an Elo rating below 2000. There were 116 players from 37 countries competing in this group.

After 9 rounds, Vo Hoang Quan won 7.5 points with 7 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. Vo Hoang Quan ranked second, while the champion was the home player Serbia D. Jakovljevic (8 points).
This result reflects the true strength of the Vietnamese player at the tournament. Thanks to his achievements at the tournament, Vo Hoang Quan was awarded the title of FIDE Grandmaster (CM). This is also the motivation for this 18-year-old player to continue his chess career. This player was discovered and trained at the Future Grandmaster Chess Club in Hanoi under the coaching of International Grandmaster Bui Vinh.

Notably, Vo Hoang Quan competed in this tournament with his own funds. It is estimated that the cost of a trip to Serbia is around 50 to 55 million VND. This shows the high level of socialization in the Vietnamese chess community today.
Also at the tournament, another Vietnamese player, Vo Tran Quoc Bao (from Ho Chi Minh City), competed in the group with Elo under 2,300 and ranked 9th overall with 6 points.
