Việt NamViệt Nam23/01/2024

However, there are still many users who become “prey” for fraudulent organizations, losing hundreds of millions of dong. So what to do when your phone number is revealed and how to prevent it?

1. Harmful effects of personal information disclosure

It can be said that searching for information in today's society has never been easier. The development of information technology makes data exploitation and sharing faster and more convenient. However, because of that, users' personal data is also easily leaked. Bad guys take advantage of the loopholes of internet users to steal information for profit. The most common of these is exploitation through phone sim.

Phone numbers are now more important than ever to users. It is not only a means for users to contact and connect, but also related to other issues such as: bank accounts, emails... Once a personal phone number is revealed, there will be many risks that can occur such as:

* Being called by others to sell products, advertise, or even to bother and harass.

* Get users' phone numbers to post scams and threats.

* Bank account money was stolen.

* Stolen SIM card, especially with SIM card that is not registered to the owner.

* Called to collect unrelated debts.

In fact, there have been many cases where users had their phone numbers exposed and were scammed, losing hundreds of millions of dong. The case of Mr. Duong Van Din ( Hai Duong ) is an example.

On the afternoon of August 11, 2023, he received a call from a person claiming to be a district police officer, informing him that Mr. Din had opened an account to commit fraud. After threatening him, the line forced Mr. Din to provide all his personal information and 400 million VND to quickly resolve the matter, otherwise he would be arrested. Due to the surprise, Mr. Din and his wife withdrew 5 savings books and prepared to hand them over to the scammer. Fortunately, Mr. Din was able to report to the commune police and prevent the incident from happening.

Another incident involved Pan Chu Lin (Taiwanese) who, along with two other compatriots, pretended to be police officers and inspectors to call and threaten 18 people, illegally collecting more than 10 billion VND. Their main method was to call and inform the recipients that they were involved in money laundering and crime. To prove their innocence, they had to transfer money to the investigation agency's account. However, this account was actually a scam account, and as soon as money was deposited, they would withdraw it all.

Most of the people who are scammed are elderly people, people in remote areas, and have little access to the media. Therefore, they do not know how to avoid phone scams. When informed that they are involved in a dangerous crime, they are all afraid and quickly transfer money to solve the problem. That shows that the disclosure of personal information, especially phone numbers, is extremely harmful. There are people who have had their entire fortune stolen.

2. What to do when your phone number is revealed?

An easy-to-recognize sign when your phone number is exposed is that you often receive annoying messages or calls that are unrelated to your work or life. At this time, stay calm and handle it in the following ways:

* Never provide personal information when a stranger calls and asks for it.

* Change your password and log out of applications and services that you use your phone number to register.

* Call the operator of the network you use for support to lock the SIM

* If you see signs of fraud or have lost your bank account, call 156 immediately to report.

3. Measures to protect personal information security

When your phone number is revealed, it not only makes you feel annoyed and disturbed, but more seriously, it also makes you vulnerable to fraud and property theft. Therefore, you should proactively take the following measures to protect your personal information safely and securely:
