STEM activities (an interdisciplinary teaching concept combining the subjects of Science , Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) help students approach science and technology early, thereby enhancing creativity, developing thinking, and at the same time inspiring passion and career orientation in fields with high human resource demand.

Connect with students

Recently, Quang Nam University coordinated to organize the activity "STEAM Festival in the context of digital transformation" for 120 students from Vo Thi Sau Primary School, Kim Dong Primary School, Nguyen Van Troi Primary School and Nguyen Hien Primary School, in Tam Ky and Ban Thach wards.

Students experienced a series of activities in the “Creative Stop” including: Colorful rain; creating cartoon characters; smart thermos; making pictures from basic shapes; Sierpinski triangle... guided by students from Quang Nam University.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu Anh, Principal of Nguyen Hien Primary School (Thach Ban Ward) said that STEM is one of the activities that the school focuses on and includes in the integrated teaching program.

The school has established a STEM Club, organizing experiential topics suitable for each grade level. Through extracurricular activities, teachers and students can explore scientific knowledge and apply interdisciplinary knowledge to STEM or STEAM activities (integrating the arts). This approach contributes to improving the quality of teaching and learning in the direction of developing students' qualities and abilities.

In addition, thinking and creative activities are organized in groups, helping students practice teamwork, communication, cooperation skills and develop flexible thinking, contributing to nurturing love for science and technology.

Similarly, recently, the University of Technical Education (University of Danang) organized a STEM Robotics experience activity for about 150 students from Nguyen Khuyen High School, Luong The Vinh High School and Nguyen Duy Hieu High School (An Thang Ward) with the theme "Green Robot - Green Future".

Students get hands-on experience, closer access to technology, engineering and scientific thinking in the context of digital transformation and sustainable development.

The highlight of this activity is the robotics innovation contest “Green Robot - Green Future”. Students from schools can participate in assembling and programming robots, performing simulated tasks such as collecting and sorting waste or moving materials from simulated areas…

Nguyen Van Khanh, a student at Nguyen Khuyen High School, shared: “We got to know robots, tried to operate them and found this to be a very interesting creative playground. This activity helps us to have a clearer orientation about our interests as well as our study plans and future career choices.”

Mr. Vo Anh Tai, Principal of Nguyen Khuyen High School (An Thang Ward) said that STEM activities coordinated at the school attracted the participation of high school students and parents.

Students are interested in experiencing scientific experiments and applying science and technology to real life.

In the past, when hearing about robotic creation, many students were hesitant because they were afraid of the complexity and difficulty of implementation, but when guided, they gradually became interested. Many students showed their creative spirit, proactively coming up with ideas, designing and coordinating product demonstrations.

The school plans to organize this robotic playground more often to stimulate students' participation and creativity. The school board plans to coordinate with the University of Technical Education to organize training courses on STEM teaching activities in schools for the school's teaching staff to improve teaching and learning skills.

Open the door to the future

To implement STEM activities for primary school students, Quang Nam University previously organized a training course on "Designing and organizing STEAM activities in teaching" for more than 120 pedagogical students.

Students are guided in methods, classroom management skills and how to organize effective creative activities. Through these activities, students of Quang Nam University are equipped with more knowledge and practical skills in designing and organizing better project-based learning activities at the primary level.

According to teachers' assessment, STEM activities not only bring valuable experiences to students, but are also an opportunity for teachers of general schools to approach the integrated teaching model; observe how students participate in real projects, thereby applying project-based learning methods, learning through experience and integrating technology into lectures.

This lays the foundation for sustainable development of local STEM education, while strengthening the connection between schools and higher education institutions within the same innovation ecosystem.

Dr. Nguyen Linh Nam, Vice Principal of the University of Technical Education (University of Danang) expressed that over the past years, the school has focused on innovating university governance, improving the quality of training and scientific research to meet and keep up with social demands and trends.

The school wishes to accompany schools to improve teachers' capacity in approaching the STEM education model and applying technology in teaching; organizing scientific and technical activities; STEM experiential activities; participating in teaching career orientation experiential lessons for students, contributing to promoting the development of science and technology and innovation.

Along with that, through STEM experiential activities, students develop many important skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and technical skills right from high school. In particular, it opens a new door to future career orientation for students.
