On the occasion of Vietnam's National Book and Reading Culture Day (April 21st), in the Truong Sa Special Zone – a remote and strategically important area of the Fatherland – a quiet but meaningful tradition is being maintained and spread: the reading culture among officers, soldiers, and people on the islands.
Although the bookshelves on the island are not large, they are organized scientifically and contain a diverse range of genres such as politics , history, literature, science and technology, and life skills, meeting the reading needs of officers, soldiers, and civilians.
In conditions where living conditions are limited, maintaining a reading habit requires perseverance and a high level of dedication. After hours of training, patrolling, and guarding, the sight of soldiers taking advantage of breaks to read has become commonplace.
In Truong Sa, each book holds value far beyond its pages. It is a spiritual gift from the mainland, a message from the home front to the front lines.
Books help raise awareness, cultivate political fortitude, and nurture spiritual life, providing motivation to stand firm on remote islands.
A reading culture is not only present within the Navy but also spreads throughout the communities on the islands of the Truong Sa Special Zone. Families, especially children, are increasingly having access to books through support programs from the mainland.
At schools, models such as "friendly library corners" and "bookshouses for children" are being built, creating a welcoming reading space and fostering a love of books.
For young children, each book opens up a new world , helping to nurture their dreams and aspirations, and forming a reading habit – an important foundation for long-term development.
Reading culture in Truong Sa not only serves learning and entertainment but also plays a crucial role in building political fortitude, unwavering will, and a healthy cultural life.
Books about history, the sea and islands, and national traditions help each person to better understand, love, and be proud of their homeland, thereby enhancing their responsibility to protect its sovereignty .
At the same time, reading also helps balance mental well-being, mitigate the negative impacts of a secluded environment, and maintain optimism and unity among officers, soldiers, and the people.
