The days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year) are the busiest time of year in Duong Lieu vermicelli village (Duong Hoa commune, Hanoi ). The village makes vermicelli year-round, but from October onwards it's the "peak" period, with the sound of machines running and people and households bustling to meet orders for the Lunar New Year.

To ensure the vermicelli noodles are fragrant and of high quality, the people of Duong Lieu village are busily taking advantage of the dry, sunny days at the end of the year to dry the finished product.

While quickly drying fresh batches of vermicelli under the dry sun, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen, a long-time vermicelli maker in Duong Lieu, said that during the peak Tet holiday season, the amount of vermicelli supplied to the market increases 4-5 times compared to normal days. Instead of maintaining only 5-6 vermicelli-making sessions per month as before, her family now has to double the frequency to keep up with orders. Although the product currently mainly serves domestic needs, the vermicelli makers here are striving to improve quality with the hope of soon exporting Duong Lieu vermicelli.

To produce the famously chewy and delicious cassava vermicelli, the villagers meticulously go through all the steps from grinding the cassava tubers and filtering the starch to gelatinizing it.

After being thinly spread, the rice flour is dried in the sun on bamboo frames until it reaches the "right consistency" before being cut into strands and packaged, bringing the full flavor of the village's dry, sunny land into each bowl of soup during Tet.

The Duong Lieu craft village used to have hundreds of households producing cassava vermicelli for the market. However, today only 30 to 40 households continue to maintain the craft.

According to many vermicelli producers in the craft village, despite the difficult economic situation this year, the price of vermicelli is higher than last year, and the number of orders is more stable than in previous years.
