Having been involved in the carpentry profession for more than twenty years, but this year's flood season, Mr. Nguyen Van Vinh (Vinh Phu village) has just seen the flood water rise so high. "Previously, the flood water rose less than a meter, but this time it rose to more than 2 meters. About 10 cubic meters of wood was washed away at the workshop; and machinery and equipment such as motors, computers, cutting machines, sanding machines, wood grinders... were all broken. In recent days, the brothers working at the workshop have focused on repairing them, using whatever can be reused, otherwise they have to buy new ones. The initial damage is estimated at about 400 million VND. With this situation, it will take a whole week for my wood workshop to resume production," Mr. Vinh shared.

400 million VND is a huge loss for Mr. Vinh's family's wood workshop, but according to him, other families in the craft village suffered more damage and had more wood washed away than his family. According to Ms. Truong Thi Kim Huyen, Secretary of Vinh Phu village Party Cell, there are currently more than 50 households in this village maintaining and sticking to the wood production profession. After the flood, many families had damaged equipment and wood washed away. In order to resume operations, households are busy cleaning up and buying new equipment... The locality is continuing to grasp and review the damage of people in the craft village.

Phu Hoa 1 commune has My Thanh broom-binding village, which is famous for its traditional craft that has been preserved for generations. Floodwaters have submerged many of the local people’s broom-binding materials and machines.

Mr. Phan Van Phong (My Thanh village, Phu Hoa 1 commune) confided: “This should be the peak time to concentrate on producing brooms in time to serve the Lunar New Year; however, people are facing many difficulties because the raw materials are flooded and severely damaged. With 6 tons of raw materials of my family that are wet, if it is sunny, I can dry them and “save” 50-60%, if it is not sunny, it is considered a waste”.

Ms. Pham Thi Kim Phi's family (in the same village of My Thanh) also had 4 tons of raw brooms wet; not to mention the number of finished brooms bundled up. "If the finished brooms get wet, they cannot be used and must be thrown away; but the raw brooms can be reused if the weather is sunny. More specifically, this is the time to produce brooms for Tet, but in reality, we only know how much we can make and sell, and it certainly won't be enough to sell during the upcoming Tet holiday," Ms. Phi said.

Instead of bustling and busy production to serve the Lunar New Year, many households in traditional craft villages affected by floods are now struggling to overcome the damage. Many people believe that the profits they have received in recent years are not equal to the damage caused by this historic flood.

The floods not only caused damage to production but also made it more difficult for businesses and local people to do business. In the wards and communes of the Eastern Dak Lak region, where daily trading activities are quite busy, they have not been able to recover.

After 5 or 6 days of cleaning, the business premises of Ms. Le Thi Hong Man, representative of Minh Huy Mechanical Company Limited Branch (Tuy Hoa Ward) is still in disarray. Ms. Man said: “My house has been cleaned since the flood receded, but the mud is still there. I sell equipment, iron doors..., all of which were flooded; now I have to clean every item, big and small; and on top of that, I have to worry about damaged goods and meet customer orders.”

Pushing mud, pouring water, cleaning from items, display shelves..., Ms. Pham Thi Luyen, an employee at a labor protection equipment store in Tuy Hoa ward, explained: "Flood water wet more than 50% of the goods in the store. Although the work of cleaning the facility and collecting wet goods has been going on continuously for the past few days, it will take more time for the store to return to normal business operations."

According to the representative of the Department of Industry and Trade, the floods have caused a lot of damage to production and business activities in the area. The Department has requested the People's Committees of communes and wards to review and count the damage of production and business establishments in the area; propose solutions to support the restoration of operations as soon as possible to stabilize production and business and ensure the circulation of goods, meet the supply chain, serve the needs of the people, and develop the local economy .

As for industrial and commodity trading establishments, the department also recommends organizing environmental cleaning, checking electrical system safety; fixing damage and problems of machinery and equipment, etc. Production and trading establishments should strengthen control of raw materials and product quality to ensure safety for consumers.
