As an appointment for music lovers of Quang Nam, the 3rd "Bolero - Homeland Melody" Festival returns with careful preparation, professionalism from the contestants and enthusiasm from the organizers.

“The sky poured rain/ For the deserted street/ Stirring up so many memories/ The sky poured rain, wetting the children's clothes/ Since when has the rain fallen?” - the entire audience seemed to fall silent to listen to Le Vinh Phu (Tam Ky unit) narrate “Rain in the night of a small province”.

A stage with white areca flowers blooming in front of a thatched roof, a perspective of a boat with poles on the beach... is enough to evoke the familiarity of the homeland. And especially the voices from all over Quang Nam, with the scent and vibrato that can only be found in bolero melodies.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong - Director of the Provincial Cultural Center, Head of the Organizing Committee of this festival said that the first purpose is to create a playground for those who are talented in singing and passionate about bolero music in Quang Nam to have the opportunity to exchange, meet and show their talents.

“From the success of the previous two festivals, this festival is expected to bring a beautiful musical space to the audience. At the same time, this is an opportunity to discover talented artists from the localities, contributing to the development of the cultural and artistic movement of Quang Nam” - Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong said.

From hundreds of performances, the Organizing Committee selected 21 excellent singers to enter the final round. Ms. Le Thi Thuan - a contestant from Nong Son is one of the singers who were highly evaluated to enter the final round of the festival.

Originally in a land where people love bolero melodies and smooth voices, Le Thi Thuan said that this playground is something she has wanted to participate in for many years. Nong Son is also a locality that regularly organizes the "Bolero Love Songs" contest so that people in the communes have the opportunity to express their passion, as Mr. Nguyen Tan Lac - Director of the Nong Son District Cultural Center said.

“Bolero is back”

From moonlit nights on the river, difficult jungle treks or busy farming days, soulful songs are sung. People in Quang Nam are especially fond of bolero. Although this musical genre primarily uses the musical ranges of Southern folk songs.

The late musician Vu Duc Sao Bien once said that bolero in Vietnam is a genre of love songs in 4/4 time with a steady and rhythmic rhythm, intended to tell a story (“Sim flower hills”, “Lan and Diep love story”, “Two graves pine hill”…) or express a feeling (“Ben giang dau”, “Lanh tron dem mua”, “Nui buon gat tro”, “Pho dem”…).

“Vietnamese musicians tend to slow down the bolero tempo, using Southern folk melodies to “soften” the songs and make them closer to the common people. The meeting between traditional Southern music and bolero creates bolero love songs with quite unique folk melodies” - the late musician Vu Duc Sao Bien once said.

It seems that because of its lyrics and popular melody, each bolero piece sweetly conveys the singer's feelings. To sing bolero, it is not only necessary to have a good vocal range and standard pronunciation. The emotions each person chooses to convey to the listener are the important things to have a successful bolero performance.

Ms. Tran Thi My Ly - judge at the "Bolero - Homeland Melody" Festival this time said that with each competition season, she saw that the contestants were more professional and invested. They knew how to master the stage, choose appropriate music arrangements and perform songs that were consistent and harmonious with the accompaniment...

This is also the opinion of musician Tran Que Son as a judge of the contest. Tran Que Son believes that the singing movement of Quang Nam is developing well with many well-educated people as well as contestants being given opportunities from local playgrounds so that they are not surprised in front of the audience and the big stage.

Many contestants from Quang Nam have become famous after the seasons of the “Bolero - Homeland Melody” Festival. Tran Hao Nam - the runner-up of the first season of the festival, is now a familiar name on many music stages in Da Nang City. He also participates in street music competitions organized by many organizations.

With Huynh Thanh Thuy - runner-up of season 2, she is currently participating in many musical activities in Hoi An, Da Nang as well as neighboring localities. And many other contestants coming from the playgrounds and mass music competitions of Quang Nam, have gradually affirmed themselves with passion and talent...
